PRINCETON HASH HOUSE HARRIERS HASHES 1 - 77 (10/7/79 through 11/24/85) BACKWARD On or about April something, 1986, our Hash founder, guru, Grandmaster and mentor, Joe Burns, "checked" out of the Princeton Hash to go to Boston. Many folk believe Joe left because he had to get a job, what with the second kid. The truth is they raised the drinking age in New Jersey eliminating the endless supply of beer that used to flow out of Stevenson Hall. Before he left, Joe joined the Geezer, Wacko and Toxic Waste in putting their half-a-minds together to assemble a running count of all the previous hashes (we spent a good fifteen minutes between commercials). The information was obtained from memory (eh?) and "SHHHH, A History of Princeton Hashing, 1979-1985," which is a collection of Stevenson Hall newsletters available to those who care to muse over the happenings of that era. This document will concentrate on the who, what, when, where and why's of the first 77 Princeton hashes, (Stevenson Hall hashes back then), i.e., the pre-hash-newsletter hashes. The when's, where's and what's that follow are occasionally accurate, the who's are hopelessly lacking and the why's we'll never know. If you don't see your name on a hash you ran, don't get bent out of shape, it just means you're a totally insignificant human being and nobody remembers you. In general I only put down information documented in the SHHHH or which I could at least vaguely remember. Therefore it is up to each of you to tell me which hashes you were on. Maybe you remember another totally insignificant person who ran on the hash too or some other equally obscure piece of hash trivia. We are making a database of the Princeton hashes in order to identify important events like when Bob Pascal first became the Louisiana Reptile Fancier and how many times we have run through Herrontown Woods. When it comes to the first 77 hashes, the database will reference this document. Therefore, the time to dredge up your long term memories is now. Send info to Wacko, 1512 Country Mill Dr., Cranbury, NJ 08512 (609-426-0893). A few facts about the following before we get started. I jumped back and forth between hash names and other names so some of you may not recognize... The Geezer (Maitland Jones) Wacko (Dan Wachspress) Toxic Waste (Andy Kaufman) The Louisiana Reptile Fancier (Bob Pascal) Bodysnatcher (or Snatch) (Matt Baker) It Hurts (Jerome Mertz) and Effross (Effross) Also, while putting together this document, I ran across constant references to someone called a "winner" or "first to cooler" in our hash literature. I decided editing this out would not be the historian thing to do Happily, the competitive aspect of Princeton hashing has subsided; after 12 years and over 300 hashes we mainly just try to survive. May the next 77 be as fun. On On. PRINCETON HHH Hash #1 DATE: 10/7/79 SET BY: Joe Burns WEATHER: Overcast HASHERS: Geezer, Wacko, Andy Kaufman, Arlene S.
