Activities

For almost fifty years the Princeton Bar Association, a not-for-profit professional organization, has served local lawyers.

It welcomes as members all practicing attorneys and judges who live or work in Princeton and adjacent towns and townships. The Association has grown from a handful of members just 20 years ago to nearly 200 members today.

The principal activity of the Association is its monthly luncheon, featuring speakers of interest to the profession. The 2002-2003 year opened with the Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, Deborah T. Poritz, and concluded with a presentation by the Honorable Jack M. Sabatino concerning the recent rule change permitting jurors to ask questions during trials. Other recent speakers have included Supreme Court Justice Virginia A. Long, Appellate Judge Philip S. Carchman, a popular and frequent invitee of the Association, Judge Neil H. Shuster, Presiding Judge of the Chancery Division, Superior Court of New Jersey, Mercer County, U.S. Representative Rush Holt, Trenton Mayor Douglas Palmer, former Princeton University General Counsel Howard Ende, Val Ackerman, Commissioner of the Women's National Basketball Association, and Eric Solomon, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury (Regulatory Affairs).

The Association also assists lawyers in finding other lawyers locally for referrals of new matters or for informal consultations.

The Association holds an Annual Holiday Party for its members and judges who reside in the Princeton area.

Members of the Association donate their time and services to community events, such as the Princeton Hospital Fete held annually in June.

Lawyer Referral

The Princeton Bar Association does not have a formal system for helping the public find a lawyer.

For a current listing of the addresses of many local lawyers, go to http://www.princetoninfo.com/busdir.html or to the yellow pages.

For biographical information about individual lawyers and law firms and their areas of practice, go to http://lawyers.martindale.com/marhub or http://www.wld.com/ldsearch.htm

There is a lawyer referral service which serves each county in New Jersey and there are legal aid offices.

If you cannot afford a lawyer, there are municipal public defenders in most local municipal courts.
