Literacy Volunteers in Mercer County, Inc.
|
This is the story of my life: When I was five years old, I went to school. I was in kindergarten. My mother took me to school everyday. She was very sick. My dad left when I was small. He left all of us to be on our own. My mother worked seven days a week so that she could provide us with a good home. I went to school until I turned sixteen. Then I dropped out and got a job so that I could help my mother. She got more sick as time went on and eventually went to the hospital for two weeks. She never left the hospital. She died at 9:15 on a Tuesday night, June 30, 1986. My life was so dark that I could not see anything. When I turned seventeen, I took a first aid course so that I could join the squad. The course lasted for five weeks. When I completed the course, I joined the first aid squad as a volunteer. This lasted for fifteen years. But the volunteer squad eventually had to close and was replaced by a paid squad. I met my wife when she was sixteen. I went with her for two years before we got engaged. We stayed engaged for nine years before we got married. We got an apartment and started our with very little furniture. We slept on a single bed and had dressers made of cardboard. We ate our dinners on a snack tray until we were able to afford a table. We used a shopping cart to do our wash and our food-shopping. We didn't own a car so we used to take the bus around town. Then one night, we went to a Bingo game and I hit the jackpot. I won 1,975 dollars. My wife and I then went to the store and got the stuff we needed to make our home a nicer place.
I'm going to close for now.
