Resources for Tutors

A well-stocked Tutoring Kit has the following items:
- Notebook, paper, and pen or pencil for the learners
- Each student's address, phone number, and background information,
including initial assessment
- Name tag for yourself and students, written in large manuscript
letters if working with a small group
- A copy of Tutor, a copy of I Speak English and tutor training class
handouts.
- Assessment tools
- Notebook or folder for your records (attendance, lesson plans,
notes)
- Real-life reading material of high interest to the learner.
For example, you may wish to include sports magazines, TV guides,
cookbooks, newspapers, comics, etc.
- Low-level, high-interest books from the library in your students'
interest area
- Extra paper (carbon paper if you are working with dictated
writing and don't have a copy machine available)
- 3"x5" cards
- Book or selection for modeled reading
- Beginners' dictionary
- Blank Learner/Tutor Agreements for the first session
- Motivational material to read to your students
- Your lesson plan
- Simple crossword puzzle book
- Games such as Scrabble or Boggle
