A well-stocked Tutoring Kit has the following items:
  • Notebook, paper, and pen or pencil for the learners
  • Each student's address, phone number, and background information, including initial assessment
  • Name tag for yourself and students, written in large manuscript letters if working with a small group
  • A copy of Tutor, a copy of I Speak English and tutor training class handouts.
  • Assessment tools
  • Notebook or folder for your records (attendance, lesson plans, notes)
  • Real-life reading material of high interest to the learner. For example, you may wish to include sports magazines, TV guides, cookbooks, newspapers, comics, etc.
  • Low-level, high-interest books from the library in your students' interest area
  • Extra paper (carbon paper if you are working with dictated writing and don't have a copy machine available)
  • 3"x5" cards
  • Book or selection for modeled reading
  • Beginners' dictionary
  • Blank Learner/Tutor Agreements for the first session
  • Motivational material to read to your students
  • Your lesson plan
  • Simple crossword puzzle book
  • Games such as Scrabble or Boggle
