PPPL’s Science On Saturday Lecture Series

The Ronald E. Hatcher Science On Saturday Lecture Series returns to the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) this year to offer lectures to science fans of all ages. Talks run from 9:30-11 a.m., which includes a presentation and Q&A. The talks are held online and in person at the Melvin B. Gottlieb Auditorium in PPPL’s Lyman Spitzer Building, located at 100 Stellarator Road in Princeton, New Jersey. Register here for the Zoom link for all the talks.

Jan. 25: “The Science (and Art) of Polling,” Patrick Murray, Monmouth University - Is polling really a science? It depends on what you mean by both “polling” and “science.” This presentation will discuss the social science methods that underpin opinion research, its varied applications from business to public policy, and how to be a better consumer of what is perhaps its most problematic manifestation – the election poll.

January Nature Walk, Friends Of Princeton Open Space

Start the year with a peaceful winter nature walk through the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve. Led by our stewardship team, this guided walk will offer a chance to explore the quiet, wintery landscape and discover the unique beauty of the preserve during the colder months.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy the calm of the winter woods, get some fresh air, and start the year with a deeper connection to nature. Be sure to wear sturdy, weather-appropriate footwear and bring a pair of binoculars if you’d like to spot winter birds or other wildlife.

Princeton Skating Club Open House

The Princeton Skating Club invites you and your family to attend an Open House at the Princeton Day School rink located at 650 Great Road, Princeton, NJ. The Club hosts Open House events to provide information about membership, group lessons and an opportunity to skate with us. Skate rentals will be available for free.

From the time of our founding in 1933, Club members have appreciated our warm, family atmosphere, which encourages lifelong enjoyment of ice skating for everyone. The Princeton Skating Club is a private club for all ages and levels. Families appreciate the opportunity to develop friendships and involve their children in shared interests, whether on the skating rink or gathering for the Club’s social events. Club ice time is offered at a top quality facility conveniently located at the Lisa McGraw Rink at Princeton Day School.

History/Nature Hike at Institute Woods, Historical Society of Princeton

Princeton Battlefield parking lot 500 Mercer Street Princeton Join us on a hike through the treasured Institute Woods to explore bits of history, as well as the sites and sounds that form this unique and serene setting. Hear stories about the Woods’ origin and the ways IAS mathematicians, physicists, and other members have engaged with it. Stops along the way will highlight the history of early Stony Brook, the Battle of Princeton, the Old Trolley trail, the establishment of the Institute for Advanced Study, and Founders Rock. We will make a special stop at the infamous Swinging Bridge, then hike over to the observation decks at the adjacent Rogers Wildlife Refuge. Along the way, there will be moments to observe, engage, and identify the different varieties of birds, plants, trees, and everything in between!

 “Messages”, a one-act play by New Jersey playwright Fred Dennehy, offers a heartfelt and humorous exploration of a longstanding marriage challenged by early-stage dementia of one of the partners. This acclaimed work delves into the delicate balance of love, struggle, and mutual caregiving, showcasing how the bonds of a shared life can both divide and unite. A finalist in the 2020 Strawberry Festival in New York City, “Messages” has also captivated audiences at festivals across New Jersey. Don’t miss this moving and thought-provoking production!
