Up

There was a swarm of ants that showed up a few weeks ago.  They suddenly appeared out of nowhere in great numbers and they soon ended up everywhere.  Someone assured me that a swarm of flying ants never lasts very long.  The ants crawled about and then suddenly soared off into the air in a quick erratic flight landing not too terribly far away.  Every ant that burst into sudden flight had no control as to where it landed.  In an article I read it explained that the wings that flying ants grow appear very quickly in the late spring.  They develop on the ants because of a natural response mechanism.  When a particular colony becomes too crowded and confined and limited for the colony to expand, almost magically wings appear on a large number of ants in the colony.  Because the wings are a spontaneous, once in a lifetime thing given to these little insects, they have no real control as to where to land.  The wings simply provide the power and motivation to move out.  It is rather a miraculous thing when you think of it.  God has mysteriously supplied wings to lift the ants and free them to start a new colony in a new place.  Flying ants are a profound parable for the wonder of God’s grace.  It is only when we become aware that our world has become too small and that we have buried ourselves in places that confine and limit what God intends that God awakens the wings of the Spirit in us.  It is faith that lifts us up by trusting the love that calls each of us to grow and expand in the light.  We don’t always know where we are going when we become lifted and freed by our faith.   Our confidence comes from knowing the God who gives us wings will guide our lives aright.   --H.S
