The morning was clear and crisp. The temperature outside was cold, but the bright sun sent its warming rays through the front window. The room was warm and still. It was then that the fly appeared. It crawled out of its hiding place between the inner and outer windows. It must have found a place safe and secure. It hide from the deadly cold until the right time came to emerge. It was fooled this morning by the unseasonable warmth of the sun. The fly appeared out of nowhere and began to walk slowly up and down the panes of glass as if it were checking out the time and the possibilities. Never once did it attempt to fly. Instead, it simply walked up and down, back and forth, stopping only to rub its wings in anticipation and then wait. Nothing happened. Its time had not yet come. The wings never responded as they might. In quiet acceptance of what was not yet to be, the fly retreated out of sight. Much of our lives we need to be content with waiting. There are some things that simply cannot be forced without losing everything. Underneath it all, we know that. The hard part is accepting it. The fly seemed to know that her day of a new beginning wasn't up to her. She didn't give up, she simply decided to wait, to trust that it can happen and be willing to wait until it does. Faith is nothing
other than hopeful waiting. That is all God asks of us. We
are asked to believe the day of our newness, our dream, our hope, our longing
will come. We do what we can toward making it happen, but on most
days what we can do about our own renewal is precious little. The
best we can do is to trustfully accept that it will happen when God is
ready to bring it. "Blessed are those who wait upon the Lord before
the wings come. It is a very personal thing. The only assurance
is God's promise. They will come. The most important task of
faith is to turn over the project of our wings and the timing of change
to God and willingly wait with the rest of God's creatures for as
long as it takes. --H.S.
