A Note from the President:
Dear Members and Friends:

              I join the Steering Committee, Ruth, Joyce, Shirley, Hattie, Linda  and Ilean, as we welcome all back to another productive and, we hope, fun year with the “Network.”  My summer was particularly restful, and I am grateful to have had the respite.  I hope yours was as well. 

We, the Steering Committee, met last week to brainstorm our Calendar for the coming year, and we have sketched a “road map” that includes our traditional events, the Open House on October 12th and the Woman of the Year celebration next spring.  Our theme for the year is “Afro-centric Decorating,” and we will discuss this with the membership at the general meeting on September 9th.  Please consider suggestions for presenters and presentations on the theme. 

     

Among the other topics that we will discuss at the September meeting will be our progress with the scholarship nominees for our returning women college awards.  We will also consider nominations for the Woman of the Year award. 

We are excited about our plans for the 2003 –2004 CJNBW year, and we look forward to ensuring that the Network continues its traditions and goals.  We are a dynamic group, and as we have in the past, we can expect that we will take new paths as we strive to connect with women and others who need us and who help us grow.

IMPORTANT DATES

August 26 - 7:30 p.m. - Steering Committee Meeting held at MCCC. The meeting was held on August 26, but will return to the first Tuesday of each month starting October.

Tues., September 9 - 7:30 p.m. - Regular Monthly Meeting at  Hickory Corner Rd Library, 138 Hickory Corner Rd., E. Windsor (448-1332).   The  meeting is open to anyone interested in joining the CJNetwork.  

    

This will be a business meeting, and the Steering Committee is hosting it. We look forward to seeing everyone as we start a new year.  Remember to bring your friends.

Sunday, October 12,  3 - 5 p.m. - Annual Open House at Hickory Corner Rd. Library, East Windsor.  We again look forward to decorations by Louise Smith.  More information will be forthcoming.

Saturday, Sept. 13 - 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. - "Taking Care of Sisters" An evening for African American Women.  Place: Princeton Fitness & Wellness Center, 125 State Rd (206), Princeton, NJ. Cost - $10.  Registration required (609) 497-4480) or register online at http://www.princetonhcs.org/calendar.html.  A panel of health experts will discuss ways you can protect yourself and your family against health conditions that are common among African Americans.  Enjoy an evening of delicious food and enrichment.  Dr. Cecelia Hodges will present

    

 dramatic readings about the lives of famous African American women.

Saturday, Oct. 4 (Rain date Oct. 11)  9 a.m.-5 p.m. - Witherspoon St. Presby. Church Street Festival, Corner of Witherspoon & Quarry Sts., Princeton, NJ.  There will be music, dancing and singing, crafts, food, vendors, flea market, games and events for kids.  All are welcome.

Saturday, Oct. 4 - 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. - Hyatt Regency Hotel, Princeton, NJ.  A Conference for Women - "Celebrating the Seasons of Your Life". Cost - $25 per person.  Experts in women's health and wellness will discuss a wide range of topics that span all ages. OTHER IMPORTANT  NOTES
The Book Club (named  "Reading Between the Lines") continues.  The date for the next meeting will be decided at a future meeting.  In the meantime, you can start reading "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston.  Bring new suggestions for our reading list.
 
Steering Committee Corner This Committee is made up of the officers of the Network.  We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Twin Rivers Library, 276 Abbington Dr., E. Windsor, NJ.,  (609-443-1880).  Any member can attend these meetings, if so desired. 
 
The Steering Committee met on Tuesday, Aug. 26 at Mercer County Comm. College. Plans were started for our Annual Open House to be held on Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Hickory Corner Rd. Library. We will be asking Louise to add her decorating touch. We plan to invite the scholarship recipients from last year and will present the new scholarships. Letters have been sent to Ryder, MCCC and Middlesex in search of candidates for this year's scholarships.    

Shirley will be calling the greeting card company so we can start taking orders, the profits from which goes to the Scholarship Fund.

Start thinking about names to submit for our Annual Recognition for 2004 and give those names to anyone on the Steering Committee.  Linda will be heading this event and we would like everyone's input.

HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

A scholarship was awarded in June to Chanel Lennon, a 2003 Hightstown HS graduate.  She is now attending Berkeley College, Woodbridge, NJ.

 

CLOTHING COLLECTION

Clothing (in good condition and clean, for working women) are always needed by the Urban Women's Center, 1201 W. State St., Trenton.  Contact: Dir., Doris Williams (609) 989-1925) and Dress for Success, (also known as Suitably Dressed), 640 S. Broad St., Trenton (contact Mary - 989-6639 - from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.; Mon - Fri).  These organizations assist women who are returning to work      and do not have the proper attire for work.  They also need shoes and handbags.  Thank you for your help in this matter.  Your donations will be greatly appreciated. If you have large donations, it would be best to contact these agencies and arrange for drop off and to find out if they have the space for large donations. They can use suits and other clothing  for men, also.

It is our intention to remember all who are ill, lost a loved one or congratulate members and their families when achievements are made.  However, you must let Joyce know so mention can be made in the Newsletter.

 

TIPS

White Fabrics Turned Gray: Dissolve 1 tbs. borax in a cup of hot water and add to the final rinse to help whites become white again.  An old-fashioned bluing agent that you add to laundry or a whitener and brightener may work, too.
