PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Dear Sisters:

 

We are fast approaching the busy Holiday Season which can get rather hectic.  Always remember to take some time out for yourself to relax so you are capable of dealing with the stress that undoubtedly comes with the territory.

 

We do great work in assisting students with scholarships, however, we do need fresh ideas for our fundraising efforts in order to continue giving scholarships to high school students, and also to women returning to college after many years of absence.  Bring your ideas to our upcoming meetings.

 

 
 

 

We also need ideas for some fun activities, and also guest speakers.

 

 I'm sure we are all looking forward to the "Tea" at Cookie Cottage on Dec. 1, which is a fun activity.  Remember to tell your friends to mark their calendars.  A flyer will be going out within the next week

Film Festival sponsored by West Windsor Human Relations Council and the West

  

Windsor-Plainsboro African American Parent Support Group.  Its title is "Race, Faith, Gender and Class Issues-the Challenges & Opportunities we face in a Global Community." The festival will run over a 7 month period, and will be held at the West Windsor Township Library, 333 N. Post Road, Princeton Jct. from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.  The first film, "Last Chance for Eden" will be shown on Sat., Nov. 3.  Barbara Flythe will lead a discussion following the film.

Steering Committee Corner --
This Committee is made up of the officers of the Network. We meet at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Twin Rivers Library, 276 Abbington Dr., E. Windsor, NJ., (609-443-1880). Any member can attend these meetings, if so desired.

TIP for November, 2007

 

Laundry:  If dirty clothes have a really strong odor, add 1/2 cup baking soda to the rinse cycle and make certain that you don't overload the washer because clothes won't be able to move around enough for cleaning.  Also, try a second rinse cycle.

It is our intention to remember all who are ill, lost a loved one, and congratulate members and their families when achievements are made. However, you must let Lois know so mention can be made in the Newsletter.

CONGRATULATIONS to Kevin and Regina who are the proud grandparents of two new baby  boys born in October to their sons and their wives.  They now have a total of three grandchildren.  How wonderful!!

Phishing: A New Kind of Identity Theft

P hishing is a relatively new strategy used by criminals to obtain your personal information over cyberspace. It is when identity thieves, called phishers, use e-mails and the Internet to masquerade as a company you normally do business with in order to fraudulently obtain personal information, like your user name, passwords, credit card numbers, or bank account numbers. A phisher might send the potential victim a fraudulent e-mail that appears to be from a legitimate Internet address. It contains a justifiable request, 'such as asking you to verify your personal information or account details by clicking on a link in the e-mail, followed by a negative consequence if the information is not provided, such as the discontinuation or suspension of your account. If you fall for the scam and disclose the requested information, the sender has achieved his or her goal of obtaining your personal information to use for identity theft crimes.

In the newest phishing scam, spear phishing, the targeted victim is a single user or a department within an organization. The victim receives an e-mail that appears to be legitimately addressed from someone else in a position of trust within that company, like the company's human resources manager. The e-mail requests sensitive information, like log-in IDs or passwords. With this data, hackers can gain entry into secured networks.

To avoid being phished, always delete e-mails from unknown or suspicious senders, and never click the links within the text of such e-mails; then empty your e-mail trash box. Notify the company from which the e-mail appears to come, if possible; most companies want to know if their company name is being used to scam people, so they can take action to protect their reputation. Finally, you can report instances of phishing to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and your State and local authorities.
