PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Dear Sisters:

Our annual Open House and Scholarship Award celebration is fast approaching – Sunday, March 13th, 2005.  Our Open House is always an event that showcases who we are and what our service means to us and to our communities. 

This year, the Central Jersey Network of Black Women will very proudly present academic support awards to several area women college students at the Open House.  These women have demonstrated their commitment to their academic lives and prospective careers, overcoming obstacles in their pursuits.  We are happy to be able to support these women, both financially with book awards and by offering to mentor them.  This is one of the best things that CJNBW does.  Please come out to the Open House to bear witness to the efforts of the student

awardees and their families.  Bring guests and friends, especially young ones.  Our keynote speaker will be the Honorable Judge Paulette Sapp-Peterson.

As we have in the past, this year, members of the Network celebrated African American History month with communal poetry and prose readings.  Thank you, Illean, for spear-heading this educational and entertaining evening.  Thanks also, Louise, for the decorations and for the individual gifts to all who attended.  What a charming surprise!

Hope to see many at the Open House – the start of Spring with the Central Jersey Network of Black Women.

IMPORTANT DATES

Tues., March  1  -  Steering Committee Meeting conducted via e-mail due to weather.

Tues., March. 8- 7:30 p.m. -  Regular monthly meeting at Hickory Corner Rd. Library (448-1330)  cancelled this month as we are having our Open House on March 13.  However, the Steering Committee will meet at the Hickory Corner Library, immediately after accepting a Proclamation for Women's History Month from Mayor Mironov at 8 p.m. at the East Windsor Municipal Bldg.  Any member wishing to come to the Municipal Bldg. should feel free to do so.  We need to clear up all loose ends for the Open House.

Sun., March 13 - 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. - Open House at Hickory Corner Rd. Library.  Scholarships will be distributed at this time. The Honorable Judge Paulette Sapp-Peterson has graciously agreed to be our guest speaker. We must be out of the Library when they close at 5:00 p.m. as they do not allow anyone to remain on the premises on Sundays after the alarm is set.

At this time we will be giving academic scholarship awards to 7 women, and this promises to be a very nice affair.

Sat., March 19 - 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Community Health Fair at Hightstown High School. 

This event is sponsored by the Community Action Service Center, Hightstown, NJ. We need volunteers to help with our table.

Sat., March 26 - 9 a.m. - The Latina Women's Council of Mercer County, Inc. is celebrating Women's History Month with a breakfast at the Ramada Inn of E. Windsor.  Tickets are $30 ea.  If interested, contact Ms. E. Hernandez (254-6974) or Ms. N. Garcia (443-4836).  Guest speaker, Sandra L. Ewell, Pres. of Common Ground Inst.

Sat., April 9 - Mayors' Shining Star Ball at the Ramada Inn of E. Windsor.  This affair is Better Beginnings Day Care Center's major fund raiser.  Joyce's husband, Liston, who has been the COB for almost 35 years is asking for your support.  If interested, we have a letter with information.

Tues., April 12 (tentative date) 7:30 p.m. Art Show at our Regular Monthly Meeting at Hickory Corner Road Library.  This Show will be given by "Creative Collections".  More details in March.

May 3 & 4 (Tues & Wed) - 8 p.m. - Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater @ State Theatre, New Brunswick, NJ.  Order tickets: 1 (877) STATE-11 or www.StateTheatreNJ.org - $18-$55.
The Book Club (named  "Reading Between the Lines")  is on "hold" for the time being, and we hope to resume in the future.
 
Steering Committee Corner This Committee is made up of the officers of the Network.  We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Twin Rivers Library, 276 Abbington Dr., E. Windsor, NJ.,  (609-443-1880).  Any member can attend these meetings, if so desired. 
The Committee met on Feb 1st at the Twin Rivers Library.  A great deal was accomplished via the internet as stated above, and we are confident the Open House will be successful.

All applications have been received for the awards and are ready to go for 3/13. 
Illean has been asked to make contact for newspaper coverage for the Open House.

Contact has been made with Hightstown High School and a package from them should be received re scholarships to high school students.
Hosts for Various Months
Hattie will host the meeting with the Pilates Instructor, Ms. D. Thomas. (This has been postponed from last October to a future date).

Ruth will host the Holiday Party.

Joyce will contact the Alzheimer's Assn. for Nov.
Illean will host the African American History Program in Feb.

Linda will host the Art Show in April

We need someone to host the May meeting "Identity Theft"
 
TIPS

Use empty toilet paper rolls to store appliance cords.  It keeps them neat, and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to.

Spray your Tupperware with non-stick cooking spray before pouring in tomato based sauces - there won't be any stains.

Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.

Don't throw out all that leftover wine:  Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.

 
 

GET WELL

Please remember Niambi's friend, William who still needs our prayers and cards.  Call Walter or Joyce if you need his address.  He'd love to hear from us.  
 
CLOTHING COLLECTION
Clothing (in good condition and clean, for working women) are always needed by the Urban Women's Center, 1201 W. State St., Trenton.  Contact: Dir., Doris Williams (609) 989-1925) and Dress for Success, (also known as Suitably Dressed), 640 S. Broad St., Trenton (contact Mary - 989-6639 - from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.; Mon - Fri).  These organizations assist women who are returning to work and do not have the proper attire for work.
They also need shoes and handbags.  Thank you for your help in this matter.  Your donations will be greatly appreciated.

  If you have large donations, it would be best to contact these agencies and arrange for drop off and to find out if they have the space for large donations. They can use suits and other clothing  for men, also.
 
PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS
 IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS:
Ruth's sister, Laurel, Ruth's mother,  Louise's uncle; Kevin Quince; Illean's brother, Bill,  and Lorna's mother.
We continue to wish them all well and keep them in our prayers.
It is our intention to remember all who are ill, lost a loved one or congratulate members and their families when achievements are  
made.  However, you must let Joyce know so mention can be made in the Newsletter.
