Dear Sisters:
Black History Month, as we all know, is a
time to celebrate our history. However, that doesn’t mean we
shouldn’t celebrate the other 11 months of the year, as well,
we should. At this time, especially, we remember those who
sacrificed so much in order for the rest of us to achieve some
progress. However, in spite of our achievements, don’t forget
those who are still struggling to meet daily needs, some
of which we take for granted.
In the coming months, we are looking
forward to several events, namely our Black History Month
celebration on 2/14, the Open House on 3/19 and the Woman of
the Year Program on 6/4. That is quite a full plate, but we
can do it with the support of family and friends.
Illean has been working hard to get
confirmation from the NJ Amistad Commission and she was
finally able to confirm that a speaker will attend our Feb. 14th
meeting. We will be mailing a flier

to invite local organizations to attend. The Commission ensures that NJ schools have to
incorporate African-American History into the Social Studies
curriculum. The contributions and experiences of African-Americans will be adequately taught in classrooms.
Assemblymen William
Payne and Craig A. Stanley sponsored Bill #A1301 which passed
in 2002 so our history isn’t lost. Thanks to Lois for
bringing our guest speaker, Dr. Renee Walker, to our January
meeting. We had a lively discussion about Dr. Walker’s
experiences working on one of then Gov.-elect, Jon Corzine’s
transitional teams. Check out the many Black History Month
programs throughout the county and enjoy as many as possible.
Also, have a Happy Valentine’s Day. Good luck to all, Joyce
