PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Dear Sisters:

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I welcome spring, my very favorite season of the year.  Enjoy planting your vegetable and flower gardens.  Also, now is the time to get in some outdoor exercises and activities utilizing our many Mercer County Parks.

Ladies, we did another terrific job on March 25, with our Annual Open House.  I thank you for your hard work and perseverance. The three students who received scholarships were excellent choices.  We thank their advisors, Ms. Rodriquez from Mercer County Community College and Ms. Joseph from St. Peters College, who are positive role models to these ladies.  They continue to be supportive of our efforts to assist women who have had the courage to return to school and pursue their dreams.

Our guest speaker, Ms. S. Harley did a wonderful job and I’m sure the students learned a lot from her experiences.  A big thank you goes out to her.

Thank you CJNBW members for your cooperation in making the Open House a success.  Special thanks to Lois for being our college contact person; to Louise for all the beautiful decorations which were

a hit, and to Liston for designing and printing the Program Booklet.

Congratulations to our “Honorary Members” George, Marcia, Niambi and Walter.  We can’t thank these individuals sufficiently for their monetary contributions towards our scholarship fund.

Our guest speaker for April 10, will be Melva J. Harris, an Independent Business Owner, who will speak about “getting in control of your own financial lives, living debt free, taking your life out of the hands of employers, and retiring with the assurance that your money will not run out.”

We have been fortunate to reschedule Ms. Satterfield for our May 8 meeting, having had to postpone her talk in February due to bad weather.  Remember, her topic will be “African Americans in the Princeton Area” dating back 6 or 7 generations.  Please invite your friends

I look forward to seeing everyone at these upcoming  CJNBW meetings

Joyce

TIPS for April, 2007

Keep cut flowers fresh – To keep cut flowers around as long as possible, mix 2 tablespoons cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons sugar with the vase water before adding the flowers.  Be sure to change the solution every few days to enhance the longevity of your flowers.

Keep out four-legged creatures from your garden -  Some animals – including cats, deer, rabbits, and raccoons – can’t stand the scent of vinegar even after it has dried.  To keep these unauthorized visitors out of your garden, soak several rags in white vinegar and place them on stakes around your veggies.  Re-soak the rags about every 7-10 days

PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS
 IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS:

We also send well wishes to  the following:  Louise's uncle, Kevin; Illean's brother, Bill;  Lorna's mother.

It is our intention to remember all who are ill, lost a loved one or congratulate members and their families when achievements are made. However, you must let Ruth know so mention can be made in the Newsletter.

OTHER COMMUNITY INFORMATION

Greater Goods Thrift Store

The Greater Goods Thrift Store has opened in their new location at 413 Mercer Street (Rt. 33), Hightstown, NJ (Lucas Electric building).

Greater Goods Thrift Store will sell high-quality donated clothing and household items. This project recycles community resources in a number of ways: by accepting donations (and reducing the waste of disposing of useable items), the thrift store will meet a critical need for affordable clothing, furniture, and household goods. Proceeds from all sales will fund family support programs and community partnerships that benefit families in the Hightstown-East Windsor area.
