   Teaching Activities

By Pamela Caywood

Pam, Bill & Grace

Your toddler is a sponge. She is absorbing so much each day. Is it too early to teach her some real skills? I don't think so. We have tried to introduce Grace to some fun activities. The emphasis is on FUN!

We have had great success with toddler gymnastics. Not only does Grace enjoy it but she is learning valuable safety tips on how do a somersault, jumping on a trampoline and walking across a balance beam properly. It has also improved her coordination.

We are not in training for the next Nadia but we do hope that these skills will help her in whatever activities she participates in as she gets older. The YMCA/YWCA have a wonderful array of programs from gymnastics to swimming to karate. Also, you should look into the programs sponsored by the local parks and recreation department. Generally these programs are for 6 weeks and they are priced very reasonably. It gives you a chance to experiment with some different activities without having to plop down a big chunk of change.

If your child stays at home, these activities one day a week are a nice diversion. Plus, it gives your child a chance to socialize with other children and it also gives you a chance to socialize with adults. I have met some great parents and fun playmates for Grace. Another positive is that you will meet parents who know about other great activities which you didn't know existed. I have found these parents to be great resources for all sorts of tips. (How do you think I get all my material for these articles???)

I learn new things from these activities too! Grace and I have enjoyed reading time at the library. The librarian not only reads wonderful stories but she sings songs and shows us hand movements. Many of these songs are new to me. I feel like I am a "with it Mom" when I can keep up with the neighborhood children singing the fun songs. After reading time, Grace looks for books to check-out and I read parenting magazines and the new adult books. If you sign-up for reading time then you will actually go once a week. The library is another place to meet new friends.

Look for the schedule of activities at local craft stores and Zainy Brainy. These places teach your children how to make things based on their age level. They usually provide a monthly schedule with activities for children of all ages at various times during the week. Book stores are another source for things to do. Before you go to these places, let your child know if you will buy anything this trip or if it is a watching trip only!

There are so many things to do with your child that it is easy to overload the schedule. Try to pick one or two things a week so that it is manageable and a treat for your child. If your child isn't having fun then stop the activity. These times should encourage fun while your child is learning. I think that we all learn a lot better when we don't realize that we are learning something!
