The Ronald E. Hatcher Science On Saturday Lecture Series returns to the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) this year to offer lectures to science fans of all ages. Talks run from 9:30-11 a.m., which includes a presentation and Q&A. The talks are held online and in person at the Melvin B. Gottlieb Auditorium in PPPL’s Lyman Spitzer Building, located at 100 Stellarator Road in Princeton, New Jersey. Register here for the Zoom link for all the talks.
Jan. 25: “The Science (and Art) of Polling,” Patrick Murray, Monmouth University - Is polling really a science? It depends on what you mean by both “polling” and “science.” This presentation will discuss the social science methods that underpin opinion research, its varied applications from business to public policy, and how to be a better consumer of what is perhaps its most problematic manifestation – the election poll.

Princeton Battlefield parking lot 500 Mercer Street Princeton Join us on a hike through the treasured Institute Woods to explore bits of history, as well as the sites and sounds that form this unique and serene setting. Hear stories about the Woods’ origin and the ways IAS mathematicians, physicists, and other members have engaged with it. Stops along the way will highlight the history of early Stony Brook, the Battle of Princeton, the Old Trolley trail, the establishment of the Institute for Advanced Study, and Founders Rock. We will make a special stop at the infamous Swinging Bridge, then hike over to the observation decks at the adjacent Rogers Wildlife Refuge. Along the way, there will be moments to observe, engage, and identify the different varieties of birds, plants, trees, and everything in between!

Learn the basics of fencing with Olympian Abdoulaye Thiam through demonstrations and interactive participation followed by a Q&A.
This presentation begins with an interactive workshop for a limited number of teen participants (age 12-18). Registration is required for this portion of the program. All are welcome to observe the demonstration as space allows and join in the Q&A with Olympian Abdoulaye Thiam without registering. Attendees will be directed to specific seating areas to allow enough space for the sword demonstrations.
