Wednesday September 13, 2023
1:15 PM - 3:30 PM

The Hopewell Public Library is happy to collaborate with the Sourland Conservancy to host a tour of the Foraging Forest! It will be conducted by their Stewardship Coordinator, Eric Williams, and their volunteer manager Sari Pehnke. The tour will begin with a general orientation meeting at the gazebo first, then a guided walk over to the garden. The tour will include descriptions of the plants in the area, history of the plants, and why they planted them. Part of the garden also includes pollinator plants which, while not suitable for eating, are great for the insects. Eric and Sari are both incredibly knowledgeable so please make sure to come with any questions you may have in regards to native plants in our region. Princeton, The Nation's Capital: 1783, Historical Society of Princeton

Wednesday September 13, 2023
6:30 PM

Rescheduled from 9/7

The American Revolution shooting war had ended in 1781 and the Colonies are awaiting word that peace negotiations in Paris will result in a treaty. Because of delays in negotiating across the Atlantic, Congress is in a dilemma. It has no money to pay the troops, but it cannot disband the army until there is a peace treaty. In June 1783, Congress, in session in Philadelphia, must flee after an Army mutiny (demanding back pay). Congress relocates to Princeton where it remains in session for 4 ½ months.

On the 240th anniversary of this pivotal time in American history, join educator (and long-time HSP walking tour guide) Barry Singer for an illustrated talk describing the developments and the people involved, as this small rural town provides the backdrop for the historic events of that summer and fall.
