Candlelight Tours at Rockingham

Sunday December 9, 2018
11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Have you heard of Madame Moose or Sweetlips? How about Nelson and Blueskin? What do Shire, Devon and Hog Island have to do with 18th-century farming? What animals did George Washington have a strong hand in introducing to America? Rockingham will present its annual Candlelight Holiday Tours on Sunday, December 9 from 11 am to 4 pm. This year's theme revolves around the "beasts"—pets, working and wild animals—that were part of Washington's and his family's life. Learn about the funny names some of his many dogs had, what wild animals were important to Mount Vernon's (Washington's main farm's) economy and what various creatures served as pets in the Washington household. The Live Historians Club of Montgomery Township High School will present the faunal information in period dress as visitors tour from room to room of the historic house, which will be enhanced in the restrained 18th-century style of holiday decoration.

Visitors will enjoy holiday goodies and warm drinks in Rocingham's Children's Museum and visit the Museum Store to shop for such items as period toys, local honey, books, the Rockingham DVD, quills and tricorn hats. Tour space is limited, so advance reservations are required to guarantee admission. They must be made by calling 609-683-7132. There is a suggested donation of $5 per person or $10 per family. Tours will be offered at least every half-hour, with 3:30 being the last tour.

Rockingham is located on Laurel Avenue/Kingston-Rocky Hill Road (County Route 603) between Route 518 in Rocky Hill and Route 27 in Kingston. For further information or directions, call (609) 683-7132 or visit

A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol - Villagers Theater

Sunday December 9, 2018
12:00 PM

Everyone’s favorite classic holiday tale gets the fractured fairy-tale treatment. All the famous fairy-tale characters take on all of the memorable roles of Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. You’ll never know who will show up next as the Big Bad Wolf (as Ebenezer Scrooge) meets his old business partner Jacob Midas (Marley), who could turn anything to gold. Midas warns Big Bad that he’ll be visited by The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future (played by a Fairy Godmother, Old King Cole, and the Queen of Hearts respectively). The ghosts make Scrooge realize what a scoundrel he’s been to the Charming (or Crachit) family — including Prince Philip, Cinderella and their kids, Hansel, Gretel, and Tabitha, their Little Match Girl — and help him to remember what the Christmas spirit is all about. This fun-filled adaptation stays true to the warmth and heart of the classic.
