Birding Field Trip, Washington Crossing Audubon Society

Free, public birding trip with Washington Crossing Audubon at Cold Brook Reserve

Join Washington Crossing Audubon Society at 8:00 AM on Saturday, October 21 for a free, public birding trip led by Brad Merritt at the Cold Brook Reserve in Hunterdon County, NJ. This 180-acre Reserve is a great place to observe fall migrants, especially sparrows and other grassland birds.

Directions: Take Interstate 78 East to exit 24 (Oldwick/Whitehouse). Proceed North on Rte. 523 towards Oldwick. Continue straight on Rte. 517 when Rte. 523 turns to the right. Beyond the center of Oldwick, the park entrance will be on the left. A gravel parking lot is located on the right side of the driveway. Keeping Backyard Chickens, NOFA-NJ

On October 21 NOFA-NJ will be partnering with the Monmouth County Extension at teaching a course on keeping Backyard Chickens. The event will take place from 9:00-11:00 at the Monmouth County Extension Office, 4000 Kozloski Rd, Freehold, NJ 07728. Pre register at

Recent ordinances have allowed people with fewer than five acres of land in some areas to keep chickens – something previously prohibited. In this workshop, you will learn some of the typical ordinance requirements, using the Eatontown Ordinance 03-2017 as an example. You will learn about the proper care of backyard chickens, along with information about how to continue your learning. Specific topics covered will include breeds, coops, pests, predators, and winterizing. Registration is required, and the cost per attendee is $15.

Fishing Day, Tulpehaking Nature Center

The Tulpehaking Nature Center invites families to create their own real-life fishing stories on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon. Children and adults can fish for free – no equipment or fishing license required.

For this event, staff from the Mercer County Park Commission’s Tulpehaking Nature Center will be at Spring Lake in Roebling Memorial Park in Hamilton with guided activities, equipment and fishing lessons. Visitors can practice their casting skills on the challenge course, learn about common sport fish and fishing regulations, or go lakeside for some catch-release fishing with the experts. New Jersey state fishing licenses are not required on this day.

A limited number of fishing poles will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, so please arrive early. Spring Lake is accessible from Sewell Avenue, off South Broad Street. Pre-registration is required; call (609) 888-3218 or e-mail
