With Joe Rosenstein -  In person + virtual

Pirkei Avot is the only tractate of the Mishnah that teaches no laws and tells no stories. Instead, it introduces ethical and judicial principles and advises scholars, would[1]be scholars, and the rest of us how our tradition was transmitted and how to interact with our contemporaries in both intimate and communal settings. Following a lifetime of studying and teaching this text, Joe Rosenstein recently completed a book entitled Reflections on Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers): Not Just What My Rebbe Taught Me, in which he examines each teaching, as is usually done, but in which he also looks at the text from a broader perspective—identifying the primary ethical principles that are contained therein and musing on their continuing relevance.

There will be three sessions. The first session will provide an overview of Pirkei Avot and will review selected teachings. The second session will focus on the major innovations in Judaism that took place in the first two centuries of the common era, as reflected in Pirkei Avot. In the third session, we will read and discuss a selection of the 88 ethical instructions Joe has extracted from Pirkei Avot. You are welcome to attend any or all of these sessions.

Removing Barriers to Civic Engagement for African Americans - Virtual Talk

Sunday February 5, 2023
2:00 PM

The Trent House Association presents a virtual talk, "Removing Barriers to Civic Engagement for African Americans," by Dr. Princess Hoagland, immediate past president of the Trent House Association and recipient of a doctorate from Stockton University, on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at 2 pm via Zoom at https://tinyurl.com/TalkFeb5. This is a free program.

Taking part in community decision-making through voting and other political activities is an important responsibility and privilege of American citizens. But some are denied this opportunity for civic engagement, have been discouraged from exercising their rights, or are alienated from political life as a force for positive change. Dr. Hoagland offers examples from the in-depth interviews she conducted with African American residents of Trenton of the barriers to their engagement in civic and political life.

Between Two Knees, McCarter Theater

Sunday February 5, 2023
2:00 PM

January 31 - February 12

Between Two Knees is an outrageously funny and wickedly subversive intergenerational tale of familial love, loss, and connection. This first play by the acclaimed intertribal sketch comedy troupe the 1491s fractures traditional narratives of the United States through the lens of the Native American experience. Smashing through where most textbooks stop teaching Native history—the 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee—Between Two Knees take us from the forced re-education at Indian boarding schools, through World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, the 1973 takeover at Wounded Knee, and maybe even breaks time itself. Did we mention it’s outrageously funny and wickedly subversive?
