Portrayed by Dr. Daisy Century As a young girl, Phillis Wheatley was taken from her home on slave ship and bought by the wealthy Wheatley family. She went on to be the first Black woman in America to publish a book of poetry. Her story encapsulates slavery, overcoming, observation, wondering about family, writing about race, the Revolutionary War, and tragedy.
