This intimate and moving remembrance of departed friends is by William Finn, the Tony Award-winning composer of Falsettos and A New Brain. It pays tribute to a disparate group that includes impresario Joe Papp, actors Peggy Hewitt and Jack Eric Williams, a teacher, the Korean family who ran a deli frequented by Finn, relatives in New Jersey, friends, long-lost pets, and, in a moving sequence, Finn's mother. A three-song conclusion offers a tribute to the victims of 9/11. Each number captures poignant, often funny glimpses of life and death that sparkle with the narrative sophistication always apparent in Finn's work.

A holiday comedy with dark overtones, Fruitcakes presents a supposedly humorous look at the behind-the-scenes events at a crisis hotline on Christmas Eve. Philip runs Lifesavers, a Venice, California organization dedicated to helping the depressed and troubled. Unfortunately, Philip is a bit down himself, having learned that Lifesavers is on the verge of eviction. His staff isn't feeling particularly helpful either, with Mrs. Munchnik giving gruff, often insulting advice, and Catherine obsessing over her own unspoken love for Philip. As the holiday approaches, various weirdoes of all shapes and sizes, from to a pregnant clothing store owner to a disenchanted Santa Claus, begin dropping in, throwing the already strained office into utter chaos. Based on the 1979 French play Le Père Noël est une Ordure, and the 1994 film Mixed Nuts.
