As a City on a Hill: The Story of a Phrase, a Myth, and American Nationalism, 55-Plus Club of Princeton
Speaker: Daniel T. Rodgers, Henry Charles Lea Professor of History Emeritus at Princeton University This talk, based on a Princeton University Press book released in paperback this fall, tells the story of that phrase and document, from their original intentions, through their centuries' long disappearance, their unexpected twentieth-century rediscovery, to their modern place in the formulas of American nationalism. The talk will describe the ways in which a text, barely known in its day, was lost, rediscovered, and reimagined, long after the fact, as foundational to the nation's creed and story.
