Virtual Art talk: The Female Gaze: Life Magazine, Gender, and World War II

Thursday May 14, 2020
5:30 PM

Alissa Schapiro, assistant curator of Life Magazine and the Power of Photography, will discuss the work of three female Life photographers—Margaret Bourke-White, Marie Hansen, and Nina Leen. The talk will focus on their photo-essays about American women in the context of World War II. With the status of female labor in the United States in continuous flux during the war and its immediate aftermath, these photographers captured the roles available to women—paying close attention to race and class in addition to gender—while solidifying their own positions within Life's male-dominated staff.

The talk will be followed by a conversation on gender politics at Life.

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Whether you are new to the Princeton area or looking for a school with a better educational fit for your family, we encourage you to attend one of our virtual admissions events! Every Thursday, we'll feature members of our faculty and staff in an informal OPEN MIC that will be guided by your questions. During this open format, you’ll get a chance to learn more about our community, curriculum, and the “special sauce” that makes us unique. This is your chance to ask all of your questions and find out if this school would be a good fit for your family.
