News05/16/2017: Summer Fun with Kids - Princeton University Art Museum
Summer is coming, and it's time to think about what to do with the kids. We are so very fortunate to live in an area that has lots to do and see. Princeton, New Jersey and the surrounding towns offer a wide assortment of fun for families. So, I decided to write a post series showcasing some fun family stops. Ed and I have visited the Princeton University Art Museum many times but never with the kids. So, last night we decided to enjoy what some may call a hidden gem. The museum is the perfect place to walk through on a hot summer day. Click HERE to read more 03/26/2017: Where are the best yoga studios in Princeton, New Jersey?
Are you searching for that mind-body connection? Me too! That’s why I tried out four yoga studios in Princeton and learned just how unique each one was. Some people wait until they have a probelm with their eyes before they call a doctor, but being proactive now about your eye health can help lower risk and prevent future vision problems. We spoke with Dr. Mary Boname of Montgomery Eye Care in Skillman, NJ to learn 10 ways to be proactive about your eye health.
1. Schedule an appointment with your eye doctor - Not only can he/she detect vision issues, but other health problems can be detected through a comprehensive vision screening. 2. Have regular physical exams to check for diabetes and hypertension - individuals with diabetes are at a higher risk for vision loss. Hypertension is known as “the silent killer” and is the 3rd leading cause of death in women. 3. Quit smoking - the habit has been linked to cataracts and macular degeneration. Smoking can also worsen dry eye symptoms. 4. Increase your water intake - water is important for proper blood flow and health cells. When you’re dehydrated, it also means your eyes aren’t properly lubricated. This can lead to dry eye, eye strain and other vision problems. 5. Keep all electronic devices out of your bedroom - The blue light emitted from tablets, phones and computers, suppresses the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Long term exposure to blue light can increase your risk of macular degeneration, and it also causes digital eye strain. 6. Know your family history - This will help the doctor determine your risk of developing certain eye diseases and a proper course of treatment. Family history of other diseases like diabetes and heart disease is also important to know since these also affect your eye health. 7. Eat well, including leafy green vegetables and foods rich in Lutein, Mesozeaxanthin, Zeaxanthin and Omega 3’s 8. Follow instructions - If you take medication, you follow a schedule according to the doctor’s instructions. The same is true for proper eye care. For example, always use sterile sailene solution when cleaning contact lenses or flushing out the eye. 9. Do the 20-20-20 exercise often, especially when using a computer - This is one of Dr. Boname’s go-to eye exercises, especially for those who use the computer on a regular basis. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It simply gives your eyes a rest. 10. Wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays - Similar to the blue light effect, UVA and UVB rays can damage your eyes and lead to a higher risk of vision problems. The best type of sunglasses are with Polarized lenses, which block out UV rays and reduce glare from the sun. If you are due for an eye exam or have questions about any of the items listed above, call Montgomery Eye Care at 609-279-0005. 12/26/2016: New Year's Eve 2016 Happenings for the Mercer County Area Hard to believe another year has come to an end! Recently, my family had an opportunity to test drive the Mercedes Benz GLC from Mercedes Benz of Princeton located on business Route 1 just down from the Bakers Basin intersection. On the day I picked up the beautiful mid-sized SUV, I posted a picture to my personal Facebook account knowing that other Princeton customers would chime in too. Sure enough, I had comments from loyal supporters professing their love for the Princeton location. I already had a good vibe from my salesperson Adam, who walked me through all the bells and whistles of the vehicle before I drove off. As this was my first time EVER driving a luxury vehicle, I felt like I was riding a bike for the first time. But that initial anxiety was quickly replaced by excitement over this stunning, state-of-the-art car. Below are some of the highlights from our experience.
Interior & Controls
I'm just going to start off by saying that this is a really sexy car! The GLC’s interior is a beautiful synthesis of elegance and innovation. The woodgrain console is integrated with the sleek touchpad that allows the driver to “connect” while driving. The sleek aluminum controls and topstiching of the seats complete the upscale and classic look of the car. As for the technology in the GLC, If you’re a good learner and already technolocialy inclined, the multimedia options, phone connectivity and navigation will be a no-brainer for you. Admittedly, it’s a small learning curve if you’re not used to all this technology! But it was fun to tinker around. You also might be used to having a gear shift in your center console, but in the GLC it’s old-schoo in a good way. To make room for all the technological features in the "cockpit area," the gear shift is on the sterling wheel. Even though the act of reaching for the gear shift in the center console is like 2nd nature, it was actually a smoother transition between gears in this car comapred to my current one.
Eco Start/Stop
The Eco Start/Stop feature kicks in when you come to a complete stop. The engine shuts off to improve fuel efficiency and cut down on carbon emmissioins. It’s a good thing Adam told me about this feature during the run-through, because it literally feels like the car breaks down. If you’re too weirded out by it though, you can shut it off.
Safety
There are a lot of safety features available to you in this car, like radar to alert you if you’re getting too close to a vehicle and pedestrian recognition that activates your breaks, and THANKFULLY I only had to experience two of them: the blind spot assist and the rear view camera. I was talking to an owner of an '09 SUV who said she loved her car but didn't like the blind spot. I told her about the Blind Spot Assist in all Mercedes Benz vehicles. The little triangle you see in the picture above is an automatic alert that beeps when a car or motorcycle is in the way. And it works! It came on when I was changing lanes on RT 1 by Nassau Park Blvd - a typically contested area. She was intrigued and had to take a look at the other necessary upgrades.
A car without a rear-view camera would be a major deal breaker for me. The GLC has one that gives a tablet-size, crystal clear view of what's behind you, plus you can toggle between 3 different camera angles just to be sure it's all clear.
Sound System
Music is big for me.. and my kids. Spotify is always playing in our house and I love a good electronic or dance beat while I’m on the road. The 590-watt, 9-channel Burmester Surround-Sound System in this car is seriously #goals. With 13 high-end speakers, you are literally abosrbed into the music. And the craftsmenship of the speaker design is the perfect blend of form and function. Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever admired a car speaker like I did in the GLC.
Smooth Ride
From Mercedes-Benz.com: “The standard-fit all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC is characterised by the rear-biased torque distribution of 31 percent at the front axle to 69 percent at the rear axle. This configuration ensures more driving dynamics and higher lateral acceleration on the road plus improved traction during acceleration. With the five DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes “Eco”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport Plus” and “Individual”, the driver can tailor the characteristics of the GLC 43 4MATIC to inbjvdividual preferences at the tap of a finger.” Even though I was looking at this from the POV of a mom carting around kids, the GLC is great for driving enthusiasts who want a little extra power. One of the biggest things that we all noticed was how smooth a ride it was in the GLC. I’ll admit that it’s fairly easy to loose track of the speed limit because of how smooth the car whips around corners and accelerates up hills. My girls even pointed out how it wasn’t as bumpy a ride as it is in our current SUV. For those who appreciate the experince of driving a manual shift car, you can switch to that too!
Size
Having been a passenger in a few Mercedes Benz cars in my life, I have always appreciated the roominess of the front and back seats. It would be too snug to fit 3 carseats across the back, but it worked out that we only needed two. The girls noted the space as well, and we all know kids don’t mince their words.
The trunk is a decent size for groceries, weekend trips and holding your kids’ sports equipment, and the back seats can fold down to fit 56.5 cu ft of cargo. But for this family of 5, it wouldn’t be enough for a big family trip.
Final Verdict
It was hard taking the car back to the dealership. I really enjoyed driving it and noticed the difference immediately when I got back into my usual car. However, if I did go Mercedes for my next car, it would have to be bigger. I have 3 kids, so the GLC wouldn’t be a practical choice for our lifestyle. Just like any car buying experince, you have to look at your needs and find a car that meets them. If some of your needs/wants are safety, superior technology, eco-friendly features, and customized driving options if you're a driving enthusiast, then this is your car. The model GLC featured here is $49,410. For more information, visit www.mbprinceton.com or call 609-450-1601 and ask for Adam Gelfand! I’m a self-proclaimed Instagram addict. It’s one of the first apps I check every morning and I most definitely share more about my life there than on Facebook. There's no drama on Instagram and that's why I love it. I may have developed Instagram thumb with all of the constant strolling, but that's just party of the job! Another one of our jobs here at POL is to keep tabs on what our clients are up to so we can share the love. We're a locavore team at heart and if you love local food too, then let us help you. Below is a mega list of Princeton restaurants, markets, cafes, chefs and bartenders that are totally rocking the photo sharing app (or are new to it and could use your love). I would go as far to say that their Instagramming is totally on fleek. If we missed any of your favorites, please let us know! And just note: We will share a list for the surrounding area favorites as well. Don't think we forgot about Kingston, Lawrenceville, Hopewell, Pennington, Trenton, West Windsor and Rocky Hill!

Yes, parking downtown stinks and there’s a serious need for more bars and live music, but for the most part it’s a pretty great town. With Small World Coffee, Princeton University, The Bent Spoon, Princeton Public Library, Witherspoon Bread Company, and Zoe as perennial favorites, these are some of the new reasons to
A year ago we were scratching our heads and grumbling because of all the new construction in town. Let’s look at the big picture: Princeton University is killing it with the new Art and Transit Project. The new Wawa was just a taste. By the end of next year The Arts and Transit Project will create a new home for the Lewis Center for the Arts. Finally, all of the incredible arts programs at the University - music, dance, film - will have a state of the art facility to call home.
If art or transit makes you hungry, Jim Nawn, who thankfully brought us Agricola, will be partnering with PU to open a bar and bistro in the old Dinky station - yes, another bar! Did you know that Lower Witherspoon is getting groovy? The stretch between Nick Hilton and Conte’s is on the rise. Good-bye hospital, hello new residential options and super cool commercial office space at 277-281 Witherspoon. Uber popular Yoga Stream relocated there a few months ago and thanks to the vision of commercial developer Jamie Herring, an incredible food and retail experience is on the way. Parking, no problem. Princeton Shopping Center is getting a make-over. Not only did McCaffrey’s get a much needed facelift but the entire shopping center will be transformed with outdoor community spaces and yes, wait for it, Nomad Pizza . Plenty of parking there, too. Princeton Public Library's 2nd floor will be "reimagined" - when construction is complete, the Sands Library Building will be better suited to meet the community's needs -balancing books and quiet areas with spaces that support collaboration, learning, critical thinking and creativity. That’s cool.
Thanks to El Nino, walking is still an option in February and thanks to The Sourland Conservancy, we have new trail maps. This collection of 21 maps includes a map of the entire Sourland region showing the location of each trail, parking areas, trail distances, and land cover. Other walks to try: Lawrence Hopewell Trail, St. Michael's Preserve, The Watershed, Mountain Lakes Preserve - note to self, dogs off leash will be fined. For off leash fun, take your friend to the Rosedale Dog Park. Dogs big and small are always welcomed.
12/17/2015: LOCAL Holiday Paleo and Gluten Free Cookies (Plus a Recipe) Having taken the gluten-free vows, I’ve been left with a love for artisan cookies without the ability to eat them.
This time of the year, when cookies, pies, and fruitcakes abound, it’s not easy. Yes, there are gluten-free substitutes at the supermarket, but they are full of processed ingredients. Paleo treats still leave a lot to be desired when it comes to flavor and refinement.
But help is on the way. Husband and wife team, Alpana and Gautam Rana of Smart Snack Bites make paleo, vegan, and gluten-free cookies right here in Dayton. They use only real ingredients (almond flour, honey, dates, brown rice flour, you get the point), and the cookies melt in your mouth.
If that’s not enough, the cookies have that elusive quality only good bakers bestow upon their products. Master bakers like Alpana fuse passion with the rigor of a lab technician. Being extreme perfectionists, Alpana and Gautam use only the best ingredients they can find. The results are tantalizing and at the same time comforting.
Before starting Smart Snack Bites, Alpana worked in insurance and Gautam in finance. During the recession, they found themselves without jobs. So they began playing with the idea of selling Alpana's healthy food. "I thought it was a good idea to bring it to consumers who needed it," she says.
And in they jumped. They started at farmers markets, and now—as they have gained diehard fans who are willing to pay for superior quality—they are beginning to sell to stores.
When asked about their favorite cookie, Alpana and Gautam say pistachio in unison. It is so good, they say, that "we eat it right out of the oven." This cookie is green, which makes it perfect for Christmas. They also make paleo fruitcake and various cookies (such as lemon-almond shortbreads and ginger molasses). You can create a fine cookie platter to satisfy and delight everyone. And your paleo and gluten free guests won't feel left out.
To order cookies call 732-762-5071 or place or place an order online (and because everything is made fresh from scratch, give them a few days) .
You can also buy them off the shelf at Everything Natural, Too, in Monroe. http://www.everythingnaturaltoo.com/
And finally, here is a gluten free cookie recipe to try at home. "The secret to successful baking," Alpana says, "is to try over and over until you reach perfection. I spent a year and a half testing and retesting my recipes until I perfected them." It’s led to perfection that we can all enjoy.
Gluten-Free Cranberry Coconut Shortbread (With a Vegan Option)
Yield about 4 dozen cookies
Ingredients:
6 ounces brown rice flour
3 ounces white rice flour
3 ounces tapioca flour
3 ounces potato flour
One tsp. baking powder
Two sticks butter (use vegan butter for the dairy-free version)
2 ounces finely shredded coconut
7 ounces confectioners sugar
6 grams dried cranberries, finely chopped
Start by mixing the first five ingredients (flours and baking powder) in a bowl. Keep aside. In a separate bowl beat the butter and sugar together until well mixed. They should be slightly fluffy (about two minutes in the stand mixer). Add the flours to the butter-sugar mix. Let the batter come together into a dough ball. Now mix in the cranberries (you may have to use your hands). Divide the dough into two portions and roll each into a round log or a rectangle (depending on the shape you like). Wrap each log in foil and refrigerate for about 15 mins: this will help you cut the logs very quickly. Cut the logs into half-inch rounds and lay flat about 1 1/2 inches apart.on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 325°F in a preheated oven for about ten minutes, or just until the edges seem pink. Cool on a baking rack for thirty minutes, as that helps the cookies crisp to perfection. Enjoy. In the 1940s, this warehouse was used to house mentally and psychologically unstable and insane patients. Come on, what would Halloween be without a little spook?
05/24/2015: Say Cheez Say Cheez is a relatively new spot in town, located right behind Thomas Sweets on Nassau St. As their name suggests, Say Cheez specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches. Most of their menu is different specials and variations of grilled cheeses. You can also build your own sandwich – bread, two cheeses, and sauce for $4.00 and with toppings or proteins (meats or eggs) it’s between $4.50 and $6.00. The service is great. It’s either a sweet, friendly lady or a couple of laid back guys just hanging out who just happen to be the people taking your order. It’s a nice, relaxed atmosphere that’s never loud or too much to handle. The grilled cheeses typically are a little greasy, and the bread is crispy but not crunchy. Today, I got a grilled cheese on white bread with American cheese and taco ground beef. It’s definitely a good sandwich – lots of flavor, you can really taste the meat and cheese complimenting each other. Unfortunately, the portions are not huge, and I’ve never had much trouble finishing the sandwich easily. It’s in the same price range as George’s and Hoagie Haven, but is a smaller serving comparatively. I usually have to get a side or make a quick stop in Thomas Sweets to satiate my appetite. The disco fries, a popular side of fries, cheese sauce, beef gravy, and brisket bits, are always a pleaser. If you find yourself missing the Greek food from Zorba’s, which used to be in that spot, Say Cheez features “Zorba’s Legacy” on their menu, consisting of gyros, kabobs, and falafel. Princeton University students are rewarded for all their hard work at Say Cheez. The restaurant offers a Princeton Thesis Promo where any student who brings their thesis gets their picture taken and a free grilled cheese. Congratulating Princeton students is their way of giving back to many loyal customers. Say Cheez is a fun and friendly restaurant and is surely worth a shot if you’re in the mood for a grilled cheese or want to exercise your culinary creative license with all the different combinations you can create. Open until 2:00 AM, it’s a great place to go for late night cravings too. 05/19/2014: New Jersey Farm to School Network 09/25/2013: Layering – What does it mean? I’m not sure if the term layering is a real decorating term. Did I make it up? Did I hear it in a decorating class? I rather think I picked it up from a woman I met in a Creative Memories all night cropping class (remember those?) She claimed she was an apprentice to Martha Stewart hmmmm.? In any case layering in my mind is a style of decorating that brings together different textures, colors, and fabrics in a variety styles that create a cohesive room despite all the differences. The difference is the glue for the cohesion. Maybe it doesn’t’ make sense on paper but if you hire the right decorator they can work their magic to make it happen. Layering does take skill and practice. I still fawn over my old Southern Living Magazines with their photographs of layered rooms that include: wallpaper, fabric, paint, and decorative items in a complimentary array of colors, textures, and patterns. When I look at these photographs now, they do seem dated and very busy but I appreciate that there was an art to all that layering of décor. Those rooms caught my eye and got me interested in decorating. I wanted to jump into those photographs and live and then I wanted to recreate what I saw for others to live in. Today’s layering is slightly different. The hard surfaces like walls, ceilings, & floors are more natural or neutral. Hardwood floors, reclaimed lumber and architectural accents provide a backdrop for texture and pattern rather than being a participant in the color scheme. In other words the textiles and hard surfaces in the room are complimentary to each other rather than coordinating with each other. When layering a room to your liking consider this: Does it suit you or your lifestyle? Layering in a “theme” that does not represent who you are will never make a room feel like yours. Common themes like lighthouses, palm trees, and topiaries may have nothing to do with who you are. Look at the things you love and start there. Layering is about creating spaces you love inspired by objects you have. The October issue of Southern Living has some very interesting photos of a home that has rooms with beloved objects and furniture with layers of fabric, texture, and color that provide very interesting combinations in each and every room. Take a look! Never let serious design get in the way of a little humor. Levity or just downright quirkiness can make even a seriously decorated and highly designed home feel just a little more livable. My mother had a piece of foam that we called the “kitchen snake” it survived through two renovations and would remain today if it had not completely disintegrated. It was always an object of cursioty in her décor. I have a friend who always added humor to the high-end kitchens she designed. She had a talent for making Barbie Head wine stoppers. Those things always appeared somewhere by the bar area! Maybe your quirky style includes an unusual color scheme or maybe a signature pink or red appliance. My point is, have a little fun. Get your quirky on! Even in a serious space, scribble outside the lines but be genuine. If you are having hard time expressing yourself, ask your designer, architect or decorator to help you add a little signature something to your décor or design. They can help you unleash that creative or quirky side. Enjoy these photos of some cute and quirky stuff. http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/237630/thumbs/www.houzz.com/ideabooks/237630/list/Quirky-decor-ideas 02/22/2013: Sing your heart out! Step right up! Why not toss your hat in the ring, send in an application and be one of those bands, or have your teenage son or daughter and their friends jump on stage? Here is the application link. Something we rarely think about is where our food comes from, and the carbon footprint we create when we buy foods that have to travel long distances. What we really need are foods that our good for the environment, good for our bodies, and good for our taste buds!

09/20/2012: Healthy Snacking
With the new school year underway and our children’s regular schedule back on track, it is time to help them make some healthy decisions, especially around eating. Meal time and snack time can be a challenge at any age for both children and caregivers. It is important to remember that caregivers can set the tone for their children’s eating habits. Keep in mind that children with obese parents are 80% more likely to become obese as adults and that 30% of American adults over the age for 20 are considered obese.
Toddlers are a particularly picky group of eaters. Always remember that patience with yourself and your children can be a success to eating. It may take as many as 10 or 15 tries of a particular food before a child accepts it. You should try to encourage at least one bite of food as a form of compromise.
When it comes to snacking, a toddler needs to have a morning and an afternoon snack to help balance the amount of energy he or she uses. Remember to time these snacks so as not to interfere with lunch or dinner. Some healthy snacks include fresh fruits, dried fruits, cooked and diced vegetables, cheese, yogurt, whole grain crackers, pretzels, and dry cereal. While vegetables are a great snack, when raw, they pose a choking hazard to toddlers. Large pieces of any food can also present the same risk, including spoonfuls of peanut butter. You should also avoid giving nuts, peanuts, and popcorn to toddlers who cannot grind these types of food properly to avoid choking.
School-aged and adolescent children also need snacks to help maintain their energy. In the most active of children, snacks can help to supplement their nutritional requirements and provide up to one forth of their daily caloric intake. These snacks should be low-calorie foods like fruits and vegetables. Other healthy choices include light microwave popcorn, a cup of soup, or sugar-free gelatin.
The times after school and after dinner and the most dangerous for snacking, but if eaten early enough, a healthy snack will not ruin one’s appetite. When children are snacking at these times, make sure they are not eating because they have nothing else to do. They may be anxious, wound up, or bored and are using food as a coping mechanism. Caregivers should help children to deal with their emotions and offer them alternatives in the form of other activities.
Caregivers can provide the best examples for eating for their children. Let your children help in the cooking process if they are old enough. Allow them to make some decisions about their snacks. You should commit to providing 3 well balanced meals every day. Also remember that your child will reach for the food at hand. You can help your child to make a better snacking decisions by keeping healthy simple choices readily available and making them easier to access than the other, less nutritious options.
