09/18/2020: Seasoned Coach Eugene Burroughs Will Lead Princeton Day School Varsity Boys Basketball Team

Princeton, NJ - Emerging from a field of strong coaching candidates, Eugene Burroughs has been named the Head Coach of the Princeton Day School Varsity Boys Basketball team. Additionally, Coach Burroughs supports the School as Admission Associate and Athletics Liaison in the PDS Admission Office. He succeeds Doug Davis, who had led the team for the past two seasons.

Coach Burroughs is taking the reins of a strong program that has won two Prep B Championships in the last five years and returns a number of starting players from last season's squad.

With a more than 20-year career coaching at both the collegiate and professional levels, Coach Burroughs brings a tremendous amount of coaching experience to the Panther Varsity Boys Basketball team. Most recently, Coach Burroughs worked in the NBA's G league as Associate Head Basketball Coach of the Aqua Caliente Clippers in Ontario, CA, and Head Basketball Coach of the Delaware '87ers (now the Delaware Blue Hens) in Wilmington, Delaware, after spending two years as a Shooting Coach with the Philadelphia '76ers.

His 18-year collegiate coaching career included assistant coaching positions at American University, Hofstra University and Marist College, and associate head coaching roles at the US Naval Academy and Penn State University. At Hofstra, he was an assistant for current Villanova Head Coach and two-time NCAA Tournament winner Jay Wright. Coach Burroughs was a talented player in his own right as a former Division I team player, captain and NCAA All-Rookie Team selection at the University of Richmond. A graduate of the Episcopal School outside of Philadelphia, he also has a deep appreciation for the role athletics plays at a top-tier independent school.

"There is a deep pull for me to take a leading role in basketball player and team development at this level," Coach Burroughs stated. "The high school years are such a critical time for athletes in shaping their sports career trajectories. I see major opportunities at Princeton Day School to help scholar athletes maximize their potential while also contributing to a team culture that prizes clarity, positive energy, sportsmanship and common goals," he added.

"I'm thrilled to be able to bring a coach of Eugene's caliber to Princeton Day School," said PDS Athletic Director Katie Fay. "He has had great success coaching at both the collegiate and professional levels, so he understands what it takes for players to compete at the next level and how to get there. Additionally, his own experience as a high school and Division 1 college player gives him a strong understanding of the role of athletics in high school and collegiate programs," she noted.

"I know Eugene is excited to join the PDS Community in an expanded capacity in his role in the Admission Office as Athletics Liaison. He will be an incredible resource to our student-athletes who aspire to play sports both at Princeton Day School and at the collegiate level," Athletic Director Fay further stated.

Using his extensive strategic coaching expertise, Coach Burroughs is keen to develop the following skill sets and program areas:

  • Oversight of strength and conditioning efforts combined with development of practice plans, including refinement and implementation of team offensive and defensive concepts and specialized team drills to reinforce team concepts.
  •  Ongoing assessment of team performance and fine tuning of tactical efforts to maximize performance, while working individually with players to improve offensive and defensive skills development.

Equally important, Coach Burroughs has deep experience in training, developing and supervising his coaching staff with a focus on delivering a competitive program of the highest ethical caliber for team and individual sportsmanship, personal conduct and character.

As Burroughs explains, "Our approach will be multi-pronged, with a focus on implementing statistical targets to achieve championship performance, developing methods to improve free throw shooting, evaluating players' shooting techniques, working one-on-one with players to improve their mechanics and skills, and implementing targets and measures for performance improvement."

Along with those goals, he also values building relationships with players to maximize trust. "I always strive to lead by example to establish a positive and focused team culture with clear goals and team program vision," Coach Burroughs concluded.
