05/26/2015: Slice Between

Owning Hoagie Haven, Slice Between, and George’s Roasters and Ribs, the Maltabes brothers have their own monopoly on this block of Nassau Street. Sitting right between Haven and George’s is their newest establishment, a pizza joint. Before Slice Between opened, it was Old World Pizza, known for its brick-oven pizza and fresh mozzarella. Once the restaurant said they were going to close, the Maltabes brothers decided to preserve the legacy, taking over the place. They changed the name but kept the style.

What sets Slice Between apart from the other pizza places in Princeton is their brick oven and the fresh mozzarella they use. Usually when I look at a slice of pizza, there is a layer of crust, a layer of tomato sauce, and a layer of cheese on top. Most places use shredded cheese, which may or may not have been frozen, that they sprinkle from a bag on to the tomato sauce. At Slice Between, however, you can watch the chefs slice pieces from a fresh block of mozzarella cheese and place it on the pizza. For many restaurants, the Magherita pizza is more expensive or a specialty pizza, but here, it is their only style.

The brick oven makes for a thin and crisp crust, which is hard to find at other places. You can really taste the sweet tomato sauce, especially because it is not hidden and covered by the cheese. Big circles of cheese are placed on top of the sauce, but leave much of the sauce visible both to the eye and to the tongue.

Pizzas aren’t covered in grease at Slice Between, and the cheese and sauce will never slide off the crust leaving you with a nasty mess like it does at other places. To go along with the old-fashioned style, they even serve the glass bottled Cokes made with cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. The Maltables brothers couldn’t resist bringing some of their flare to the menu. They created the Sanchez pizza, throwing the chicken cutlet, mozzarella sticks, and Sanchez sauce from the Hoagie Haven sandwich on to a pizza.

Being owned by the Maltables family, you’re likely to get one of the friendly brothers ringing you up at the cash register. It’s usually a lot quieter than Hoagie Haven and hardly has a line. Because it’s located right between Haven and George’s many people looking to beat a long line or for a change from a hoagie will file into Slice Between.

A large chalkboard is mounted on one the walls for customers to leave any thoughts or to have some fun with. Several bar stools line the big glass window looking out toward Nassau Street. A couple of tables and chairs are right outside of the store for seating as well.

Slice Between is my favorite pizza in town and would recommend it to anyone who prefers an old-fashioned, oven-brick pizza.

06/23/2013: Inspiration by Victoria Magazine

I have subscribed to Victoria Magazine since 1990.  I save each magazine and categorize them by month. 

On the first of every month I put the previous months collection away and start a fresh new month.  With coffee cup in hand I start each day looking at the beautiful images. I paint myself into those images before my hectic day begins.   For years, I never read the articles.   I do now, and they are still interesting and relevant. I‘ve always felt that if I start my day looking at something beautiful than I stand a chance at a wonderful day. 


Why do I do this?  It’s simple: inspiration.  The images in this magazine go beyond décor from the Victorian period. I am continually inspired by the detail in the images.    The common thread is, beautiful fabric, vintage furniture, interesting antiques, fabulous locations and gardens beyond belief.  I’m always sure that the more I gaze upon these images the closer I am to creating a garden, cottage, grand estate or beach house that rivals what I see on the pages of Victoria.


This little ritual gives me a daily shot of creative energy and for a little piece of the morning I am the owner of a cottage in The Cotswold’s or a guest at a villa in Provence.

It is important to mention that I have drawn inspiration from the beautifully written articles on entertaining, architecture, and literature.  I also enjoy the special features on art, garden restoration, books, theater and female entrepreneurs.
 


12/07/2012: Decorate!!!!
This is the time to "spruce" up your home with greenery and decorations. It's the best "staging" you can do if your house is on the market.

If your house is currently on the market, or if you are just about to launch it to market over the holidays, spruce it up now with some festive touches, both inside and out;  wreaths, garlands, greenery and flowers add so much to the esthetics, feel and smell of a home at holiday time.  

Set the dining room table for a festive dinner with friends or family, and leave it set for showings through January 15th.  
 
If you typically decorate a Christmas tree, do so now, and have it smelling great, glistening, and setting the stage for your "home for the holidays".  Drape garlands up your staircase rail, across your mantel and deck your halls!
 
Whatever your personal celebration during the month of December, whether Christmas or Hanukkah, or nothing at all, add candles and fresh greenery to your tables.
 
The look and smell of a "holiday" home is warm and inviting, so, take advantage of the season and go to town.  It's the best "staging" you can do right now, and you'll most likely even enjoy it yourself, as well.  
 
If you prefer faux greenery, that works wonderfully, just make sure it looks real, and not fake.  
 
My only caution is to stay away from potpourri and scented candles, as it can cause allergic reactions in some potential buyers and visitors, and everyone's tastes as to what smells good, and what smells too sweet and sickening, all differ.  When in doubt, use plain candles in simple candelabras or candle holders, use real greenery or good faux pieces, and, if you can, when you have a showing booked, add the smell of cookies having just been baked.  
 
Bake them, and leave them out with a note telling your potential buyers that they may sample and enjoy them, as they view your home.  You can have some too - Happy Holidays!!!

Best Actor Award should have gone to Uggie!

A Dog’s Life

 

After The Artist took home the gold I finally got myself to the Garden to see it.  A good thing too, as seeing it in a theater is far superior to the small screen.

 

As many have noted, The Artist was a surprise hit because its unabashed affection for Hollywood, its uniqueness as a silent movie, and its endearing cast and timeless story.

 

But I must confess my favorite aspect was Uggie the dog. Maybe I have a soft spot for dogs, and especially Jacks, in the movies, because I have a Jack Russell (Lucy) among other dogs, and before that Raleigh, both rough coats like Uggie.

 

My Dog Skip featured an equally (if not more) winning performance of a Jack that pulled at the heartstrings of movie goers in a more honest way, frankly, than Marley and Me. Don’t get me wrong – I love Golden Retrievers as much as the next one (am taking care of a puppy now) but no one can deny the intelligence, spunk and chutzpah of the Jack Russell.

 

So I was surprised to learn that some 80 years ago, perhaps around the time that Chaplin was tramping around the big screen with his mongrel, the Academy voted to not award Oscars to dogs. Foul Play!

 

Where would The Artist be without the dog? Dead!  Same for the others – Because of Winn Dixie, Skip, Marley, Old Yeller, none would be anything without their dog stars. How can Oscar deny an award to a canine that brings in the box office?

 

I vote for a special lifetime accomplishment award to All Dogs that have Gone to Heaven and not gotten their just desserts. Lassie Come Home!

 


03/09/2012: Stress and Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection

Can stress cause back, neck pain or simply any pain in general?  The answer is “yes”.  Everyone is familiar with the common pain caused by an accident or trauma however more and more people are experiencing pain caused by either emotional or mental stressors.  Mental and emotional stress causes tension.  Many people hold emotional stress in their muscles, especially the muscles of the neck and shoulders.  A growing number of studies affirm that the mind-body connection plays a role in back pain, both in setting off an initial "back pain attack” as well as in contributing to ongoing chronic pain.  Most of us are familiar with the "fight-or-flight” response. When we are confronted with threatening situations; whether physical or emotional, concrete or imagined your body (hypothalamus specifically) releases chemicals (noradrenaline and adrenaline) and these and other related hormones trigger a complex cascade of actions, leading to a state of physiological and psychological hyper-alertness.

The difficulty comes when this state of hyper-alertness becomes our default setting which is known as a state of chronic sympathetic overload. On the musculoskeletal level, the fight-or-flight response causes muscles to tense in preparation for action and if this response is not deactivated, muscles can go into painful spasms and back pain can result.

Learn to Relieve Stress

Stress is an inescapable facet of modern life.  Ideally it is best to address and/or minimize your known triggers of stress.  If this cannot be done there are numerous techniques that can be done to help minimize your body’s stress response.  For example, exercise, yoga and meditation are known to help to reduce one’s stress level.  If you find yourself in a situation where you need a “quick fix” try four square breathing. It can be done in an attempt to help to balance the sympathetic (responsible for the fight or flight response) and parasympathetic (aides in helping the body to rest) nervous system.  Simply breathe in for four seconds, hold for four seconds, breathe out for four seconds, hold for four seconds and continue to repeat. Make sure that each breath originates in your stomach (belly breathing) and that your shoulders remain relaxed.  Repeat as needed.
