06/15/2012: Greige - It's Real
Trends in color, fashion & design

I’ve heard that fashion and décor go hand in hand.  I have really noticed this trend lately. I have seen two very different trends take off in the fashion world and the worlds of design and décor.  Color and “not so much” Color.

The inquires concerning highly color saturated appliances’ particularly stoves have increased.  Two brands come to mind:  Blue Star and le cornue’.  These stoves come in a rainbow of beautiful colors and styles. They are beautiful appliances and would make a bold statement in any kitchen.

Take a look!

On the other hand I have been learning about “griege” I thought this was a clever combination of grey and beige and it is, however it is much more.  It is a French word pertaining to a natural fabric and material that is the color or lack of color: “greige”:  Who knew?

I found a wonderful blog that is entitled Greige Design. The photographs epitomize the lovely décor using this concept;

This brings me to my final point about trends – the use of the subtle color grey.

We are seeing more used in kitchen cabinetry and it is beautiful!  We received a sample door yesterday from Brubaker the custom color is Gray Matters by Sherwin Williams.

I cannot wait to see what the rest of the kitchen looks like!

02/22/2012: Listen to your body

As someone who has fairly recently become engrossed in Crossfit and its culture; I often find myself torn between “logical/scientific thinking” and a “slightly” competitive nature.  In the past couple months I have pushed my body, cringed at some of the WODs that I have completed, been thankful that I work with a chiropractor that I can get adjusted by and am surrounded by state-of-the-art physical therapy equipment/modalities at work.  As much as the body is able to be pushed and challenged, it is important to also recognize when your body is starting to “break down”.  Playing sports throughout high school, college and chiropractic school; looking back I can honestly say that I was either 1) not in tune with my body or 2) just too stubborn to acknowledge signs that my body was breaking down (I’m leaning towards the second statement in retrospect, especially acknowledging the amount of fractures and significant injuries that I have had in the past).

Pain is the body’s way of letting you know that “something is wrong or becoming injured”.  As we are aware, pain can fluctuate from mild to severe.  It is far easier to manage when pain is mild; this is when we need to be able to recognize that the body is letting you know that something is “going on.” Maybe at this stage something as simple as REST or ICE is appropriate.  But say you choose to ignore the early signs… well guess what; the pain with typically will get worse.  Of course you can “push through” the pain; but there is a delicate balance between a “good” pain (for example: working muscles that haven’t really been worked before) versus an acute or sudden “sharp/stabbing” pain.  Sometimes you need to air on the side of caution, have this pain evaluated; it’s not the end of the world to cut a workout short or take yourself out of game.

 It never ceases to amaze me regarding the adaptability of the human body.  If you are injured, a lot of times the body will allow you to “push through the pain”, but at what price?  Well, typically a more significant injury; speaking from first-hand experience.  So in short, listen to your body because it is far wiser than we can ever comprehend and injury prevention is important.
