If there is one thing that the recent past has taught us, it is to expect the unexpected. The "unexpected" of summer 2023 is that Richardson Auditorium will be closed for repairs for most of the Princeton University Summer Chamber Concerts season. The good news is that Nassau Presbyterian Church (61 Nassau St, Princeton) has agreed to host three of our four concerts.
One thing that will never change is PUSCC's mission: to expand summertime cultural opportunities for all by presenting world-class chamber ensembles, free of charge.
Here is a preview of our 56th season:
Friday, June 23 at 7:30 pm the Horszowski Piano Trio in Richardson Auditorium performs music by Bernstein, Schubert and a commissioned piece to celebrate their 10th anniversary.
Thursday, July 6 at 7:30 pm Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo at Nassau Presbyterian Church performs music by De Falla, Albeniz, Brouwer, and others.
Wednesday, July 19 at 7:30 pm the Poulenc Trio at Nassau Presbyterian Church performs music for piano, oboe and bassoon by Françaix, Fauré, Cuong and Poulenc.
Friday, July 28 at 7:30 pm the Dali String Quartet at Nassau Presbyterian Church performs music by Schubert, Piazzolla and Tchaikovsky.
The Summer Chamber Concerts was founded in 1968 by music journalist, pianist and cellist Barbara Sand. In the early years Ms. Sand readied the outdoor performance space by pruning tree branches. To this day audience members recall sitting on the Graduate College lawn with blankets and picnic baskets for the concerts.
Renovations at the Graduate College—and the inconvenience of insects, imperfect acoustics and soaring humidity—prompted a change of venue in 1991 to Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall.
Funding for Summer Concerts is provided by individual contributors, foundations, local corporations and a grant from the Mercer County Cultural & Heritage Commission.
[Tickets are free. For Richardson, available online one week before the concert through the university ticket office at: tickets.princeton.edu. No tickets are needed for concerts at Nassau Presbyterian Church.
