06/19/2018

Opening the newly renovated tennis courts between Montgomery’s Upper and Lower Middle Schools are (l to r): Dave Klein (Director of Grounds & Maintenance), Mark Herrmann (Montgomery Township Asst. Engineer), Ryan Kane (UMS PE teacher), Nancy Gartenberg (MTSD Superintendent), Karen Zimmerman (Rec Director), Mayor Mark Conforti – cutting ribbon, Rick Cavalli (BOE President) – cutting ribbon, Raheel Saleem (MHS Boys Tennis head coach), Phyllis Bursh (BOE member), Chris Penna (MTSD Athletic Director), and Elizabeth Nastus (Assistant Superintendent).

Mayor Mark Conforti and Board of Education member Rick Cavalli recently cut a ribbon to open the newly restored tennis courts between the Upper and Lower Middle Schools of Montgomery. The rebuild was accomplished through a shared services agreement by the municipality and the public schools, resulting in cost-savings on both sides. The new tennis courts are now available for student use as well as public use during non-school hours.

Mayor Mark Conforti advocated for this recreation facility upgrade as part of the Township’s ongoing parks improvement initiative. Hestated, “I am thrilled that the Township Committee and School Board were able to come together to complete this project which benefits the community.  I look forward to continuing to find areas of cooperation that will help our great community.”

The end of a 40-year lease between Montgomery Township and the Montgomery Township School District was recognized as a window of opportunity by municipal and school leadership. The ten courts located on Burnt Hill Road between the Upper Middle School and Lower Middle School get a great deal of use and had been showing their age.

Montgomery Township School District Superintendent Nancy Gartenberg agreed with the mayor regarding the excellent project results. “We are excited to have partnered with the Township to restore the UMS tennis courts.  A district athletic survey administered a few years ago indicated that tennis was the number one sport in town.  People of all ages enjoy tennis and now, not only can folks enjoy the courts at UMS and MHS, but they can enjoy the two of the courts at UMS that have been lined for Pickleball, a growing sport in Montgomery.  In the past five years we have completely renovated all of the district's tennis courts.”

According to Annette Wells, School Business Administrator, the project bid out at $677,400 last year. The Board of Education and the Township split the cost 50/50 for the project.

Eight courts were completely reconstructed, including new perimeter fencing and nets.  The two remaining courts were repaired and overlaid, also with new nets.  The deteriorated asphalt walkway that leads from the school to the courts was reconstructed.

Township Recreation Director Karen Zimmerman summed up the project, stating, “The tennis courts here have always been popular and we are so glad we were able to work with the schools to improve their quality and better serve the Montgomery public.”
