The Watershed Institute Announcesa new Community Watershed Advocate Program (CWAP) early next year (Wednesdays Jan 12 & 26, Feb 9 & 23) that focuses on climate-related water issues. These training sessions will give participants the tools they need to become effective advocates. The course is free and will be offered in a hybrid format so community members may choose to attend virtually or in person. Join us to learn about what local governments can do to build resiliency and explore New Jersey-specific resources on climate change. Literacy New Jersey Mercer Programs Tutor Training Workshop - Give the gift of literacy! Join us as a volunteer tutor and help adults improve their English literacy skills. Work one-to-one or in small groups to teach adults who are learning to speak, read, and write English. Our Tutor Training Workshop will take place on Zoom, Tuesdays, January 11, 18, 25, February 1 & 8, 2022 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Participants are expected to attend all training sessions and complete some independent online assignments. Previous teaching experience not necessary. Our training will provide you with all the essential skills and support to become an effective tutor. After the training, you'll be ready to start meeting with your students online once a week. All our current tutoring is now online.

The Historical Society of Princeton's Public Walking Tours take place every Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. Participants enjoy a 90+ minute walk around downtown Princeton and the University campus while learning about historic sites in the area, including Nassau Hall, the University Chapel and Palmer Square. Topics include the early history of Princeton and the Revolutionary War. as well as lesser-known stories of Princeton's diverse past. 1/9 – Three Kings Day Flamenco Performance, Arts Council of Princeton, 2:30pm., Fiesta del Día de Los Reyes Magos, or Three Kings Day, is celebrated throughout the world to mark the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. This live dance performance by the Arts Council’s Flamenco program, led by Lisa Botalico, will feature multiple dance numbers as you learn about this cultural holiday and end the holiday season in celebration! 1/26 – Online Author Lecture, Old Barracks Museum, 7pm., Larry Kidder will present a lecture on his book "The Revolutionary World of a Free Black Man: Jacob Francis, 1754-1836." Born in Amwell Township to a free Black mother, Jacob Francis lived his 82-year life in a world of revolutionary change. He became caught up in the rising tide of revolution in the 1760s and 70s and served fourteen months in the 16th Continental Army regiment, including at the Battle of Trenton, and then in the Third Hunterdon County militia regiment for over six years. 1/29 – Ice Harvest, Howell Farm, 10am., Neighbors once called Howell Farm the "ice farm" because they could buy ice from the pond to keep their milk cool on the way to the train station on Pleasant Valley Road. In late January, visitors to the farm will learn about the tools and technology that made ice harvesting a successful business at the turn of the 20th century with demonstrations of ice cutting, hauling, and handling. Visitors can also help pull ice blocks up the ramp to the ice house, chip ice to make ice cream, and make an ice candle to take home. Ice cream and snow cone samples will be available in the afternoon, and food will be available at the farmhouse for purchase. $4 materials fee for ice candle craft. 2/1 - “Once We Were Slaves: The Extraordinary Journey of a Multiracial Jewish Family,” 7:30pm., A descendant of one of the most prominent Jewish families since the American Revolution, Blanche Moses firmly believed her maternal ancestors were members of the Sephardic elite. Laura Leibman’s new book, “Once We Were Slaves,” overturns the heiress’s assumptions to reveal that her grandmother and great-uncle began their lives poor, Christian, and enslaved in Barbados. Leibman will discuss how they transformed their lives, becoming free, wealthy, Jewish, and—at times—white, and how their story sheds light on the fluidity of race in the first half of the nineteenth century. CKW Academy deadline for the spring 2022 issue of the City Kidz World magazine is March 1. Students, grades 1st through 12th, can submit any of the following types of submissions: Short stories, Poetry, Photo Art, Illustrations, Essays, Animated videos of 3 minutes illustrating an original story.
Students send their writing to editor@citykidzworld.com. Students should submit their names and grades. Students' whose selections are accepted, will receive an acceptance letter from the editoral team of City Kidz World magazine. The magazine will be published in mid-May 2022.
