Symposium: How Museums Are Diversifying Their Collections to Include Black and Brown Artists, Art on Hulfish on Palmer Square

A 2019 Williams College survey of the collections of 18 major US museums found that, of a selection from works by 9,000 named artists, just 1.2% of works were made by Black artists. A panel of museum curators and directors will consider how museums are now working to diversify their collections.

This symposium - jointly organized by the Arts Council of Princeton and the Princeton University Art Museum - is set to accompany Retrieving the Art of James Wilson Edwards and a Circle of Black Artists, an exhibition on view from October 14 through December 3 at the Arts Council of Princeton, Paul Robeson Center for the Arts.

Friends of Princeton Open Space is presenting a group show of photographs taken at the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve.

Perspectives on Preservation includes photos selected from submissions made to the Friends of Princeton Open Space's annual Give Thanks for Nature Photo Contest, as well as painterly photographs of botanical life at the Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve taken by Princeton photographer Frank Sauer. All photos in the exhibition are for sale with a portion of the sales benefitting Friends of Princeton Open Space.

Small World Coffee will be open for food and beverage purchases during the opening.

A Mind at Play: An Evening with Authors Jimmy Soni and Rob Goodman, Morven Museum & Garden

Known as "The Father of Information Theory," Claude Shannon is considered one of the 20th century's most important scientists. His insights stand behind every computer built, email sent, video streamed, and webpage loaded. A Mind at Play offers an inquisitive and vibrant look into Shannon's singular life including his time working for Bell Labs - the feature of Morven's current exhibition, Ma Bell: The Mother of Invention in New Jersey. Join authors Jimmy Soni and Rob Goodman for a discussion of the book, Claude Shannon, and the groundbreaking work he pioneered.

This program will be hybrid, offered both in-person and online. Doors open for the in-person event in the Stockton Education Center at 6:00 p.m. For virtual attendees, a Zoom webinar link will be shared via email prior to the event. The museum will be open from 5:00 to 6:15 p.m. where you may meet the curators of the Ma Bell exhibition, Elizabeth Allan and Jesse Gordon, inside the galleries.
