“Holocaust Memory in the Digital Age” , Public Lecture and New Book Launch, Rutgers

Wednesday September 13, 2017
7:30 PM

An expert on Holocaust representation and the role of the media in modern Jewish life, Professor Jeffrey Shandler (Rutgers University) will discuss his new book, Holocaust Memory in the Digital Age: Survivors’ Stories and New Media Practices (Stanford University Press), exploring how advances in digital technologies continue to influence the nature of Holocaust memorialization. The lecture is the launch for Shandler’s new book and copies will be on sale at the event.

Professor Shandler will explore exceptional highlights from video interviews with Holocaust survivors recorded for the Shoah Visual History Archive. Drawing on an in-depth study of these interviews that he undertook for his new book, Shandler will present excerpts from videos in which survivors display injuries or religious articles that they received during the war, revealing the power of watching survivors relate their wartime experiences.

The talk, “Holocaust Memory in the Digital Age: Survivors’ Stories and New Media Practices” will take place on September 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Douglass Student Center, 100 George Street, New Brunswick. The lecture is free and open to the public and free parking is available behind the Student Center.  (For GPS search, use “57 Lipman Drive”). It is sponsored by the Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life at Rutgers University. Advance registration is requested by emailing rsvpbildner@sas.rutgers.edu, calling 848-932-2033

Simpatico, McCarter Theater at Berlind, 91 University Place, Princeton, 609-258-2787
7:30 p.m., Buried secrets, blackmail, and false identities race onto the stage in Simpatico, a tragicomedy about the slippery netherworld of thoroughbred racing from Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist Sam Shepard. When a simple phone call causes Carter and Vinnie’s shady past to resurface, fierce loyalties that were once hot-blooded begin to run astray. McCarter is proud to collaborate with the acclaimed Chicago ensemble A Red Orchid Theatre to bring this riveting American drama to Princeton, starring Tony and Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, Nocturnal Animals, Long Day’s Journey Into Night) and members of A Red Orchid Theatre.
