RiseUPTrenton Event Showcases Trenton Success Stories and Raises Funds for UrbanPromise Trenton

La'Keisha Sutton

On Saturday evening, April 8th friends of UrbanPromise Trenton gathered at Trinity Princeton to celebrate the accomplishments of Trenton success stories La’Keisha Sutton, Daryl Virgies and Bruce Brittingham. These athletes shared their stories of hope and perseverance as they moved from childhood struggle to success on the basketball court and gridiron. RiseUPTrenton, An Evening of Promise benefitted the three free summer camps of UrbanPromse Trenton that run for five weeks in Trenton, NJ.

Ms. Sutton, a former South Carolina Gamecock, is now a professional basketball player, motivational speaker, entrepreneur and owner of Fan Favorite. Mr. Virgies, after playing football at Virginia University of Lynchburg, recently signed with the New York Giants as a running back. Mr. Brittingham, a recent graduate of Wagner College, is a 2017 NFL draft prospect. Each shared their own personal story of struggle and triumph growing up in the city of Trenton. With grit, determination and opportunity, these young adults were able to use their gifts to rise up and create a new path of hope and promise.

Ms. Sutton said that she proudly represents the people of Trenton. “We are intelligent, we are gifted, we are people with big hearts, we’re human. We just need an opportunity to rise above our situations.” When asked by Ms. Sutton what advice Mr. Virgies would give the children of Trenton – to the ‘little Daryls’ out there - he replied, “It’s not where you start, it is how you finish that counts.” Mr. Brittingham believes that “even if one less child is bullied, coerced into gang activity or ends up behind bars as a result of being part of UrbanPromise, then it has served its purpose.”

In addition to the athletes, UrbanPromise teen StreetLeaders offered a performance entitled Pick Up the Leadership, which emphasized the opportunities that UrbanPromise Trenton provides and the promise the youth of Trenton offer to their community and the world. The program was written and directed by the StreetLeader Director, Elyse Smith.

UrbanPromise Trenton is a non-profit providing free AfterSchool and SummerCamp programs to the youth and teens of Trenton. This organization is dedicated to providing these young people with the skills they need to succeed academically, grow spiritually, and prepare for leadership that will bring positive change to their communities. UrbanPromise Trenton also employs Trenton teens in their StreetLeader program where teens are mentors and leaders to the younger children in the programs. StreetLeaders receive free tutoring and college coaching as part of the mission of UrbanPromise Trenton.
