String of Pearls Teens and Parents to Assist Residents of New Orleans
Princeton, New Jersey, January 18, 2011

Program:  Service learning trip to New Orleans
Date:         February 17 - 21, 2011
Eight twelve-to-sixteen-year-old String of Pearls members and seven parents will leave for New Orleans on February 17 to participate in a service learning program focussed on assisting a local community in its continued struggle to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Coordinated through New York based Jewish Funds for Justice, the five-day trip is intended to provide insight into the scope and breadth of the disaster, an opportunity to hear stories about what happened there and why, and the chance to make concrete change to improve people’s lives. In performing this work, participants have the opportunity to develop important skills while learning about and reflecting on relevant historical, social and political issues through the lens of Jewish ethics and values.

The String of Pearls group will be working with two organizations in New Orleans: Backyard Gardeners, which conducts projects aimed at improving neighborhood viability by doing maintenance work on distressed or abandoned properties in marginal residential areas, and the Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development, which targets projects specific to the Lower Ninth Ward. The experience for the participants will be deepened by working alongside and sharing meals with members of the local community who will be direct beneficiaries of our efforts. A typical day begins at 6:45 a.m. and ends at 10:00 p.m. Participants work throughout the day, prepare their own meals, and in the evening discuss and reflect on the day’s events, engage in group study and other group activities.

Families talk about their experience from previous trips at
