Dear
Student:
The Internet resource pages had far too many
broken links for me to correct. I have removed all of them for the
site. I was getting far too many requests for files that are no longer
online.
To find out about your "hero" try
using:
Ask Jeeves
My students liked this.
Google
- Vivisimo or other search engine.
I just tried Martin Luther King Jr. You will get a
photograph of King, some biographical
information and historical information. See related searches, too (for
photographs, speeches and more)
For research, try using sites with "edu"
or "gov" in the address as these
are from universities and government organizations--these are usually
primary resources. Addresses with "org" are often quality sites,
as well --the "org" stands for
organization. Many museums also have "edu" or "org" in
their addresses. Addresses with "k12" in them are from schools and are usually
written by students or teachers. I have found that sites with
"tripod", "fortunecity", "angelfire" and "geocities" often have many advertisement
banners and are usually secondary resources (they have obtained their information
from other sites). If you get to a site with banners and
advertisements- DO NOT click on the banners as they will take you out of
the site.
When using the Internet, be sure to look for information in which
the author is stated and bibliographies are given. Look for sites
which are updated frequently--the Internet is constantly changing and many
links are now outdated. Look for information that you can verify
from other more traditional resources -such as books and encyclopedias.
Books, encyclopedias and magazines have to go through an extensive
evaluation process--reviewed by many editors and colleagues, while web
pages do not have this evaluation process.
Internet Resources-- Building Character:
Here are some sites to start to learn
about people of character
Short biographical sketches on famous people of
character
TITLES OF FAMOUS PEOPLE MINI-UNITS

Use these just for overview of your person - not for your
research paper.
