Art in the Style of…

Submitted by: Stephanie Corder, AZ Academy~ U.S. Virgin Islands
UNIT:
Art History Research - Cross Curricular
Grade Level: 6th grade (middle school)

1

Summary:

Students select an artist of their choice, research, then create a composition of an area of their school "in the style of" the artist of their choice. They write a report to share with the class. Shown: Welcoming Stairway in the style of Chagall

Materials:

Open media (within reason)
18 x 24 paper
Visual resources/prints for a variety of artists from several time periods

Objectives:

Students create a drawing of an area of the school and render it in the style of one the artist presented (from art prints - Stephanie used her table artists). For a cross curricular lesson, students are expected to write a report to share with the rest of the class in order to obtain understanding of several famous styles of art.

Procedures:

  1. Engage students in the discuss regarding the various artistic styles of artists presented in reproductions, giving background information on each artist (students select artist from the group presented)
  2. Students create four thumbnail of the school working to show inspiration of chosen artist's style, for instance, a student studying Chagall would work to draw the school in a surrealistic manner.
  3. Student and teacher will choose the best of the thumbnails to finish in medium of student's choosing.

Language Arts Assignment:

Students write a one page paper to be presented orally, describing their artist's background, their artistic style and what made it important. As a finishing touch, students explain how they incorporated their artist's style into their art project.

Lesson: Artist Research - Choice of Media
Title: Art in the Style of…

Below are two activities that should be fun to do…only select ONE for your assignment. You may do the other ones in your spare time (smile). If you wish, you may do more than one assignment for extra credit.

Parody or Satire A work that imitates the characteristic style of another work, either for comic effect or ridicule. Parody is a basic metaphor or comparison. Also known as appropriation, content, caricature, homage, and satire.

Homage - Special acknowledgment or respect shown or expressed publicly to persons whose influence an artist wishes to honor. You can show this by duplicating a famous work in its entirety or by using key elements of an artist’s style in recognition of them.

Past iche - A work of art made by imitating and combining several styles of other artist’s works. Often a pastiche is made in order to ridicule the style of the artist it imitates.
