"To Heal A Heart"
A PBS Television Broadcast

To Heal A Heart, aired Sunday July 29, on WHYY Channel 12, Philadelphia. (It was scheduled to be on many PBS stations on Thursday, July 26, 2001 (10:00-11:00 PM ET) but was not listed in New York, New Jersey or Philadelphia.

The program examined a "groundbreaking approach" to stopping America's number-one killer-coronary heart disease. Narrated by Walter Cronkite, the report examined the pioneering work of cardiologist Dr. K. Lance Gould, whose patient-directed approach has helped many people actually reverse the damage done by this disease, prevent heart attacks, and avoid expensive and invasive surgeries that once seemed inevitable. His "reversal program" combines lifestyle changes and cholesterol-lowering drugs with cardiac monitoring through positron emission tomography, a state-of-the art imaging technology that reveals the inner workings of the heart. Unlike bypass surgery and angioplasty, this simple yet revolutionary program can stop the disease process, resulting in lasting benefits. Yet, the medical community has been slow to embrace an approach that threatens not only traditional views of the physician-patient relationship but also a billion-dollar industry focused on invasive surgical procedures.

The program made many references to Dr. Dean Ornish, and the similarity of Dr. Gould's program to the Dean Ornish program is no coincidence.

A Follow-Up of Dean Ornish's Clinical Study

The Journal of the American Medical Association on December 16, 1998 published another paper by Dean Ornish showing continued favorable response to his program of life style changes at 5 years.

"In a 4-year follow-up of 35 patients with moderate to severe coronary heart disease who had previously participated in a 1-year trial of intensive lifestyle and dietary change, Ornish and colleagues found that patients in the experimental group had continued reduction in coronary artery percent diameter stenosis. In contrast, patients who received usual care had continued progression of coronary atherosclerosis and an increased risk of cardiac events." -- (JAMA. 1998;280:2001)
