His son, an opposition leader to Venezuela president Nicolas Maduro, has been imprisoned near Caracas since 2014, accused of inciting anti-government protests.

The United Nations has declared him a prisoner of conscience. His wife, Lilian Tintori, has met with U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump, who tweeted for Lopez's release in February. Prior to that, President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry called for his immediate release.
