Tuesday April 25, 2017
7:30 PM

So you think you know your Sondheim? You will have second thoughts when you listen to pianist Anthony de Mare, a champion of contemporary music with a passion for Sondheim and a brilliant idea: why not ask 36 of today’s leading composers to “re-imagine” their favorite Sondheim songs as solo piano works? Contributors range from Wynton Marsalis, Duncan Sheik, Ethan Iverson, and Steve Reich to Nico Muhly, Fred Hersch, Paul Moravec—and even Sondheim himself, who loved the idea and called it a “thrill to hear composers take my work and take it seriously.” While de Mare won’t play all 36 arrangements (which have been recorded as a 3-CD set), some songs you will recognize instantly while others will keep you guessing. And to make the evening even more fun, the audience will be asked to suggest a song for de Mare to improvise himself on the spot. Isn’t it rich?
