7:30 p.m., A company of 12 dancers celebrating Tharp's 50th anniversary as a choreographer., www.mccarter.org

Twyla Tharp has assembled a new company of 12 dancers to celebrate her 50th anniversary as one of the most inventive and innovative choreographers in the history of American dance. Both pieces created for this occasion are “unmistakably the work of a master, compendiums of what Tharp has learned and discovered over the decades about dance and making dances” (The New York Times). The first, Preludes and Fugues, is set to music from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier; while the second, Yowzie, is a wildly comic work set to New Orleans jazz, largely old Jelly Roll Morton songs recently recorded by the pianist Henry Butler, Steven Bernstein, and the Hot 9. Tharp characterizes Preludes and Fugues as “the world as it ought to be,” and Yowzie as “the world as it is.”
