Holiday decorations always represent a bit of a challenge for me. Here is why: I love to decorate my home for the season but I hate, maybe that word is too strong; dislike the combination of red and green. I love both red and green but not together, ever.
For those of you that celebrate Christmas and enjoy decorating your home for the holidays remember red and green is only a suggested color palette. You can use other colors, colors that compliment the style and palette of your home. It’s ok, go ahead, do it.
Take inspiration from nature, focus on browns, whites, creams and beiges and add a little sparkle or hint of red with berries. Pinecones abound in Michaels, Hobby Lobby etc. Use what you have in your back yard. Use what you have in your home! This year I have used mercury glass, burlap, pinecones, and twigs, ha!! This looks great because it compliments the rustic nature of my décor and the mercury glass ads a little faded elegance.
You do not have to look too hard to find examples. A Wisteria catalog arrived the other day with an abundance of sliver, blue, cream and soft green. The combinations were so beautiful!!
Here’s something else to noodle: Keep it simple!! I have used fewer decorations and like the results more. My home looks like a place for family to gather and enjoy instead of looking like a gift shop!
A nod to kitchens; a big bowl of apples, pears, or oranges may be enough for a centerpiece or an island. Leave your working spaces clutter free especially if you are entertaining. Let go, even if it is a little, you may love the results!!
Here are a few images to ponder!!
