Friends of the Lawrence Library Award Joan Goodman Scholarships to Local Students

Lawrenceville — On Thursday, May 11, 2017, Lawrence Township Mayor David Maffei proudly presented two Lawrenceville students, Kelly Wert and James Gow, the Joan Goodman Scholarship Award on behalf of the Friends of the Lawrence Library. The recipients were chosen on the basis of their academic achievement, character and service to their schools and community. The Friends of the Lawrence Library wish the best to both of these outstanding local students and are honored to award them this scholarship.
Senior Kelly Wert is an honor student at Notre Dame High School, where she is also secretary for the National Honor Society, an active member of Model UN and the Notre Dame book club, and has presented award winning papers at several conferences. Ms. Wert plans to continue her studies at Georgetown University.
Lawrence High School (LHS) James Gow’s senior schedule includes some of the most rigorous AP courses, 2 college courses at Princeton University, and meaningful research at Rutgers University that may have implications to revolutionize chemotherapy and patient care. In addition to Mr. Gow’s academic workload, he also has served as Captain of the Varsity Ice Hockey Team since he was a sophomore, has been a committed member of the LHS STEM Academy and an officer for the LHS Science Olympiad Team, Model UN and Model Congress. Mr. Gow plans on majoring in Cellular and Molecular Biology in the hopes of eventually earning his M.D. and a Ph.D. in immunology.  His career goal is to be a researching practitioner.
The scholarships are named in honor of longtime Friends member Joan Goodman.  Ms. Goodman passed away April 19, 2016, three weeks shy of her 80th birthday.  Besides being a long-time and active Friends member, Ms. Goodman was a well-respected local high school teacher.  Ms. Goodman was the driving force behind these scholarships for years. She was dedicated to presenting scholarships to students who sought academic challenges, not simply high GPAs.
The Friends of the Lawrence Library fund a variety of children’s and adult programs at the library in addition to the two annual scholarships they award. These programs are financed by money raised through their book sales and annual membership dues. If you are interested in becoming a Friend of the Library and supporting their efforts, membership forms are available at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library System, 2751 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville.
