Photo Finish at Hopewell Cub Scout Pack 71's Pinewood Derby

Hopewell Cub Scout Pack 71 held its annual Pinewood Derby on Wednesday February 15.  Four dens and 27 scouts built racecars for the event, and then competed for den and pack titles.  The Pack champion, Jimmy Waltman, was crowned following a photo finish over second place finisher Samuel Roth.  Den champions included Waltman from the second year Webelos, Matthew Immordino from the first year Webelos, Domenic Guarino from the Bear cubs, and Roth from the Wolf cubs.  Each den also awarded a prize to the best themed car.  This year’s theme was superheroes, and the races featured Batmobiles, Superman cars, a Flash car (the overall winner), a Super Mario car, and even a Kryptonite car (which topped Superman in a head to head race but could not best Iron Man).

Pack 71 will celebrate its blue and gold dinner in March, during which the second year Webelos will graduate from cub scouting and join the ranks of the Boy Scouts.   Other scouts will receive the badges they earned throughout the year.  In addition to the Pinewood Derby and Blue and Gold Dinner, Pack 71 had an active and exciting year, camping out at Washington Crossing Park, and spending a night aboard the Battleship New Jersey in Camden.  Pack 71 will be looking to enroll new scouts in September.  Students from first grade through fifth grade are encouraged to join the Pack.
