One Simple Wish Launches “The Ohana Project” to Show Foster Kids No One Gets Left B

10/09/2012

Ewing/Trenton, NJ – One Simple Wish (“OSW”), a 501(c)(3) NJ-based nonprofit that brightens the lives of foster children and vulnerable families has announced the launch of their newest effort to improve the state of foster care in New Jersey.  The Ohana Project, based out of One Simple Wish’s Trenton, NJ office, will act a resource for New Jersey-based caseworkers and foster children providing personal care items and other basic needs to children entering, living in and aging out of the foster care system.  All items will be new and available by a voucher system designed to track demand, usage and agencies utilizing the service.

Ohana, which means family not necessarily by blood but also by adoption or intention, captures the true essence of what the project hopes to create -  the sense that no one is left behind. Often times foster children are moved from their homes or foster placements after business hours or late at night with little to no personal items. The Ohana Project will be a 24-hour resource for NJ caseworkers in these emergency situations as well as during normal business hours. They will be able to view what is in inventory, call and arrange a pickup at any time to retrieve items specific for their child.

“One Simple Wish always strives to meet the needs specific to each individual child, going back to our motto: how do you help over 400,000 kids in foster care? Start with one. I’m excited for this project not only because it bridges a needs gap but it also gives us the opportunity to involve more volunteers and partner with more groups and companies looking to make a difference,” says Morgan Caldwell, One Simple Wish Program Coordinator.

The Ohana Project is not government funded or supported and One Simple Wish is counting on the generosity of individuals, groups and businesses to ensure its success.

“We want every caseworker within the Division of Child Protection & Permanency as well as any individual working with children in crisis to know that we are a resource to them and the children they serve. We will continue to offer services to children in foster care whenever and wherever we see a need,” says Danielle Gletow, Executive Director of One Simple Wish.

The Ohana Project officially launched on October 2.  One Simple Wish is accepting donations of new, unopened personal care items such as shampoos, body wash, deodorants, shaving cream and baby essentials. For a full list of needs, visit www.onesimplewish.org/ohana.  If you are a representative of a child welfare agency requesting support contact info@onesimplewish.org.

“We make helping simple. Next time you’re shopping for your essentials, grab an extra bottle of shampoo or body wash. Toiletry drives are also a great way to involve groups. It is a simple, inexpensive way to help,” Caldwell adds.

One Simple Wish Chosen Among Thousands to Compete for $50K for NJ Foster Kids

09/12/2012

Trenton, NJ, September 12, 2012 – One Simple Wish has been selected as the only finalist from New Jersey in the Tom’s of Maine “50 States for Good” program and now has a chance to win up to $50,000 in support of The Ohana Project that will provide 24/7 access to basic needs for children in foster care in NJ. Through a public vote at www.Facebook.com/TomsofMaine now through October 9, local residents can help bring the funding to Trenton, NJ with the simple click of a mouse.

The “50 States for Good” program seeks to uncover local nonprofit groups that address urgent community needs and engage volunteers to get the work done. One Simple Wish’s Ohana seeks to ensure that all children entering and living in the New Jersey foster care system have everything they need to feel as comfortable and supported as possible.

“Over 1,000 kids enter the foster care system in NJ every year. This is a terribly confusing time for kids. The Ohana Project will make this time a bit less frightening and encourage more involvement from the community in supporting kids who really need to know people are there for them,” says Executive Director Danielle Gletow.

Non-profits from each state were selected by an independent panel of judges, featuring actor and environmentalist Ian Somerhalder, Laura Burge of the social action network Care2.com, philanthropic leader and Huffington Post columnist Lisa M. Dietlin and Sam Davidson, president of Cool People Care. The public vote will determine six winning organizations to share $150,000 in funding. The organization with the most public support will receive $50,000 in sponsorship funding, while five additional organizations will each receive $20,000.

“We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on our ‘50 States for Good’ finalists and their meaningful work,” said Susan Dewhirst, goodness programs manager at Tom’s of Maine. “We can’t wait to see the lasting impact of healthy, human and environmental goodness that will come from funding our winning organizations’ projects.”

Tom’s of Maine is a longtime supporter of community involvement programs including clean waterways and greater access to affordable dental care, among many other programs. In addition, since its inception, the company has donated 10% of its profits back to the community.

Online, Anytime One Simple Wish Makes Holiday Wishes Come True for Local Kids in Need

11/29/2011

One Simple Wish, the NJ nonprofit that grants simple wishes to foster children and vulnerable families is encouraging everyone to put some of their online time to good use by joining them in their mission to grant every holiday wish they receive this year.

“One Simple Wish is available online, anytime.  People spend hours online every day.  We’re just asking for a few minutes to help us brighten the holidays for those less fortunate,” says Danielle Gletow, Founder & Executive Director.  “Even though we grant wishes all year long, when the holidays come, our program is overwhelmed with wishes. Now more than ever, we need everyone’s help in getting each wish granted, because each wish is truly special.”

One Simple Wish currently has over 300 wishes still “in the wind” on their website at www.onesimplewish.org.  Wishes range in value from $10-$100 and include simple items like baby dolls, remote control cars, toy trucks, gift cards and winter coats. Granting a wish is simple; anyone can go to the website and search the wishes by the value of the wish, the age of the recipient and many other factors.  Once they find a wish they’d like to grant, they choose to pay online or by check and One Simple Wish will purchase and deliver the gift.  Messages can be added to the wish to be sent to the recipient.

People can also choose to grant a wish in someone’s honor and One Simple Wish will send that person a special acknowledgment and custom message. Groups can also adopt Wish Gardens or Posters for their classroom, office, store or home and display wishes for their patrons, employees or members to grant.

“One Simple Wish has a lot of options for giving back this holiday season and many of them make great gifts to others.” adds Gletow.

One Simple Wish encourages donors to think creatively when granting wishes; such as paying for the items with partially used gift cards they have in their wallets or by donating credit card points through programs like American Express’s MembersGive.

One Simple Wish supports over 180 social service agencies through their Community Partner Network, which includes the Division of Youth and Family Services, Womanspace, UIH Family Partners, Greater Trenton Area YMCA and Children’s Home Society and others.

Volunteers are also needed throughout the month of December and should visit One Simple Wish’s volunteer Meetup page at www.meetup.com/oswvolunteers.

Imagine Outdoor Helps One Simple Wish Reach $5,000 in 24-hr Fundraising Event for Foster Kids

07/15/2012

Trenton/Princeton, NJ – On June 14, 2012 One Simple Wish, the NJ-based charity that grants simple wishes to children in foster care, launched a 24-hour fundraising campaign to raise money for their wish granting program as well as to kick-start “The Ohana Project”, a new initiative aimed at providing basic needs and personal care essential for children and teens removed from their homes and placed in foster care.  While One Simple Wish’s fundraising efforts have always been met with wonderful support the organization was overwhelmed with gratitude when Imagine Outdoor’s President Paul Ducharme came through at the final hour with a surprise $800 donation to bring the day’s total to just over $5,000.

The generous donation was made during a Princeton Chamber of Commerce Business After Business networking event hosted by One Simple Wish at Triumph Brewing Company in Princeton, NJ.

Representatives from Imagine Outdoor said in a statement, "When we heard about the mission of One Simple Wish and their dedication to foster kids, we knew we had to help. Whether it's a new bike or a new pair of sneakers, we are pleased we could help in a small way to grant wishes and launch "The Ohana Project"."

One Simple Wish plans to use the funds raised from the day-long campaign to grant close to 50 wishes to children in foster care and to begin preparing their new space to handle their large inventory of personal care items, school supplies, new shoes and clothing and other basic needs to support the more than 6,000 children in foster care in NJ.

One Simple Wish & Hasbro to Deliver Over 3,000 Toys and Games During Foster Care Awareness Month

05/09/2013

Trenton, NJ – May 08, 2013 – One Simple Wish, the NJ-based nonprofit that grants simple wishes to foster children and vulnerable families, is beginning its second annual wish granting journey – this year partnering with Hasbro, Inc.  to deliver over 3,000 toys and games to foster kids throughout the US.

“May is National Foster Care Awareness Month and we thought there was no better way to raise awareness than by taking our wish granting program across the country, showing the general public that there are many ways they can support youth in foster care,” says Danielle Gletow, One Simple Wish’s Founder and Executive Director.  There are currently over 400,000 children in the foster care in the US, and our goal is to provide for each and every one of them.  And we’re well on our way to that goal having served over 20,000 individuals in its few short years of existence through 350 Community Partners in 36 states.”

Gletow, who was recently named a CNN hero for the work she has done on behalf of foster children, will travel to Indiana, Missouri, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois and Ohio from May 15-25, where she will deliver the thousands of toys and games donated by Hasbro at events planned with social service partners in those states.  “We are so grateful for the support we have received from Hasbro, as well as from donors around the country,” says Gletow.  “Our hope is to continue the momentum, so that our cause stays top of mind.”

By raising awareness with this tour, the organization hopes to showcase one of its key initiatives; showing the community that anyone can make a difference in the life of a foster child, and that a simple wish granted can have a big and lasting impact. “The website was developed as a place where social service providers can post the simple wishes of the children they are working with every day so that people all over the country then find a wish that speaks to their heart and budget and make it a reality,” says Gletow.

Through its unique take on giving, One Simple Wish acts as matchmaker, creating a system where the social service agencies and other non-profit organizations providing services to foster children can reach out to the public and ask that a specific need or wish be met for a specific child.  And with most wishes on the website (onesimplewish.org) averaging at just about $50, it allows most anyone to be able to make an impact.

“One Simple Wish makes giving easy and meaningful, but more importantly ,it tangibly shows our nation’s foster kids and at-risk youth that someone cares about them enough to not only recognize their wishes, but to grant them as well. Our site proves that there is tons of love and hope out there.” says Gletow.

One Simple Wish’s Danielle Gletow Named CNN Hero

03/08/2013

Trenton, NJ – March 7, 2013 – Danielle Gletow, Founder and Executive Director of NJ-based nonprofit One Simple Wish, has been named a 2013 CNN Hero, an honor “saluting everyday people who are changing the world.“  Chosen from thousands of nominations worldwide, Gletow is among a select group of CNN Heroes to be named this year.

Gletow is being honored for her work advocating for and acting on behalf of foster children through One Simple Wish; the organization she founded with a mission to brighten the lives of foster children and vulnerable families, one simple wish at a time.

“I was inspired to create One Simple Wish after my husband and I became foster parents in 2006,” says Gletow. “I quickly recognized that children in foster care needed a greater sense of normalcy & comfort, so I developed a website where social service providers can post the simple wishes of the children they work with every day.  Donors from all over the country can then find a wish that speaks to their heart and budget and make it a reality.”

Through its unique take on giving, the organization acts as matchmaker, allowing the infrastructure for social service agencies and other non-profit organizations providing services to foster children to reach out to the public and ask that a specific need or wish be met.  And with most wishes on the website (onesimplewish.org) averaging at just about $50-$100, it allows almost anyone to be able to make an impact.

“One Simple Wish makes giving easy and meaningful, but more importantly, it tangibly shows our nation’s foster kids and at-risk youth that someone cares about them enough to not only recognize their wishes, but to make them come true.” says Gletow.

The organization’s goal is that each of the nearly 500,000 children in foster care today is provided for.  Currently partnering with over 300 social service agencies in 35 states, the organization is well on its way to that goal, having granted over 4,000 wishes in its few short years of existence.  In addition to that, with support programs such as “Wish to Work” for children aging out of foster care, and the “Ohana Project” to satisfy immediate needs of children entering placement, Gletow has developed ways to further advocate for this often invisible population in our society.  The organization estimates that it has impacted approximately 20,000 since inception.

“I am so honored and humbled to have been recognized by CNN for the work that I am doing,” says Gletow, “but it is our donor base who are truly the heroes.  These are the people who take time from their busy lives to browse our site, read the children’s wishes and make them come true again and again.  The impact of these simple wishes granted is immeasurable to a child who otherwise has little support. So I thank our donors, sponsors and supporters from the bottom of my heart; and hope they know that they too are changing the world.”

One Simple Wish Receives $25,000 President’s Staff Award from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

11/28/2012

Trenton, NJ – One Simple Wish (“OSW”), the nonprofit organization that aims to brighten the lives of foster children and vulnerable families was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to benefit the Wish To Work program.

Wish To Work is an innovative program that provides programming and support to prepare young people aging out foster care for adulthood and to help them develop professional careers.  The funds provided by the Robert Wood Foundation will allow One Simple Wish to establish four paid medley internships, exposing youth to a variety of careers and networks.  The fund will also be used to hold two half-day interactive seminars designed to support more than 100 NJ youth exiting foster care.

Children who age-out of foster care face grim statistics with nearly a quarter of them becoming homeless, addicted to drugs, or living in poverty.

“We need to give foster children in America - those who’ve been victims of abuse and neglect - a stronger, louder voice and with the help of this grant, One Simple Wish will continue to do that,” said Founder & Executive Director Danielle Gletow.
