Christmas Tree Care

Regardless of tree species purchased, it must receive proper care in order to remain fresh, green, moisture laden and safe throughout the holiday season.  A fresh cut tree, which is not going to be immediately decorated, should be placed in a container of water in a cool shaded area, sheltered from the wind.  Before bringing it indoors, cut off an inch from the butt end.  This fresh cut will enable the tree to more readily take up water.  Immediately put the tree in a stand which will hold 1-2 gallons of water and fill it.  Since fresh trees absorb a pint of water or more each day, check water level at least once daily and always keep water level above the cut end.  Keeping a tree stand filled with water will prevent needle drop and prolong the tree's freshness and color.  DONOT Place your tree near a heat source, such as a fireplace, wood stove, or radiator in order to prevent drying.

If you find a bird’s nest in your tree, it is said to promise a year of household harmony.
